Godley/Newton Cricket Ground

Yesterday I promised to show you some green grass.

What could be better than a village cricket ground?

OK it was sometime in October when I walked past the cricket ground in Godley and there was no-one actually playing, but you can't have everything can you?

I've been informed that it is actually Newton Cricket Club, although the ground is in Godley, separated from Newton by the M67. Newton Cricket Club celebrates it's centenary in 2012.

Behind Bowling Green Street

I've already shown you Bowling Green Street.

This is at the end of the street. The railway runs in a cutting behind and beyond are the terraced houses of Alexandra Avenue and the canal side factories on Alexandra Street.

I wouldn't risk climbing that wall to peek at the bowling green, but I promise to show you some green grass tomorrow.

Exits and entries

This is looking across Clark Way to the exit sliproad from the M67. In the background you can see Godfrey Mill.

Turn 180 degrees and this is what the exiting motorist sees across Clark Way.

It is Clarendon Place, leading to the Market Place and one of the entrances to the Clarendon Mall. It is not to be confused with Clarendon Street which leads from the Bus Station to the other end of Market Place, nor Clarendon Road which is somewhere else altogether.

Brand New Benches

Last week I came across two brand new benches and a tree at the corner of Market Street and Union Street.

They are just across the road from the Cheshire Cheese and handy for watching the queues at the traffic lights.

As you can tell from this close-up, they are made of metal and will therefore be rather cold to sit upon. The rain had stopped a few hours previously but it was still wet. I've heard some folk have taken to carrying a small towel in their shopping bags for just such an occasion.

A much older bench features today on Ackworth born, gone West as my contribution to ABC Wednesday.

Sign for the New Inn

Sometime last year I posted a photograh of the New Inn on the A57.

I don't know any more about it than I did then, but today I show you a closer view of the inn sign.

Mill Lane

Mill Lane links Haughton Green to Hyde.

The bridge over the River Tame was erected in 1895.

Haughton Green is part of Denton, Lancashire and uses a Manchester postcode, whilst Hyde is part of Cheshire and uses a Stockport postcode.

Since 1974 both are part of Tameside Metropolitan Borough in the administrative county of Great Manchester. The continued existence of administrative counties called Cheshire and Lancashire does not alter the boundaries of the geographical counties.

Gravestones and Industry

Last week I showed you the Southern aspect of Newton St Mary's.

I posed the question - why won't I be showing you the Eastern aspect?

Some of you knew; some of you guessed; some of you possibly had a look on google earth. As you can see here, beyond the gravestones, there is an industrial estate behind the church.

Canal under the M67

Here is the Peak Forest Canal, yet again and the M67 motorway, yet again.

Both feature regularly here and today's photograph (which wasn't taken recently) shows the canal flowing Northwards and passing under the motorway.

Sky Watch Friday: Aldi

Today's photograph is a contribution to Skywatch Friday.

It isn't a recent photograph but the sky reflects the current mood.

Aldi is one of the smaller supermarkets and not one I've visited very often. They moved last year from a store near B&Q less than a mile up the road to this site off Manchester Road.

On the left hand side is the railway and steps to the Manchester-bound platform of Hyde Central Station.

To the right is Over Yonder.

Twin Benches

There are a number of benches inside Clarendon Shopping Mall and very well used they are. It wasn't until recently though that I noticed bench #15 had a small plaque attached to it
Donated by
Hyde Town Twinning Assocation
LES AMIS DE COLMAR
1964 - 1994
I posted about Hyde's twinning with Colmar on the Twinning Theme Day Post.

I've only looked at a few of the other benches in the mall, but this is the only one I've seen bearing this notice. Perhaps later lack of interest in the twinning arrangements led to its abandonment in 1994 and the money left in the kitty was used in this way. This is pure speculation as I can find little other information about it.

#304 Bus

The #304 bus outside the Hare & Hounds on Werneth Low Road.

The service operated by Manchester Community Transport runs just two morning journeys only between Marple and Hyde on Mondays, Wednesdays & Saturdays.

It is the only bus that serves a number of small housing estates in Ernocroft, Compstall and Gee Cross. For those who live on the route it affords them about two hours in Hyde or an hour in Marple to do their shopping and return home.

There are other routes (although involving changes) between the two towns, but as this is the only bus service to travel over Werneth Low, it is also used by those who enjoy its scenic route.

On this occasion it was just a little ahead of its timetable and so stopped here briefly, allowing me time to take a few photos including the one of Cattle on the Low.

M67 past Longlands

Recently I brought you Barmhouse Lane Bridge over the M67 motorway and showed you the view looking West towards Hyde.

This is the view looking East. Mid-week and mid-afternoon it may well seem very quiet, but if you look at the signs, you'll notice it is about to drop from 3 lanes to two as it approaches the end of the motorway at Hattersley. About a mile beyond this point it crosses over the lane by Westwood Farm from where there can be standing traffic.

Look closely (as always, do click on the photograph to view the larger version) and you should see a mobile phone mast. It is the same one as can be seen in another photograph from last year, Edge of Hattersley.

As I said then, Linda in Australia was seeking information about Longlands because she went to school there in the summer of 1967 but Longlands was demolished to make way for the M67 Hyde By-Pass.

This second photograph was taken from the lane leading from Tetlow Farm at the top of Barmhouse Lane to the bridge, looking across grazing land to Longlands Wood.

Where that wood is now, there used to be a school but it ain't there now!

A quiet view of the White Lion

The White Lion first featured here in May 2006 when I showed you the owls on the roof.

In September 2007 you saw it with a lovely flower tub in front of it.

I've also shown you what it looked like about 100 years ago on Old Hyde.

Today's picture was taken at the same time as my photograph of the last days of Woolworths.

Newton St Mary's South & January Quiz

Back in November I showed you the Western aspect of St Mary's, Newton.

A few weeks later I posted a photograph of the Northern aspect.

So here now is the Southern aspect which is the main entrance into the church.

All three photographs were taken the same day.

Which brings us to this month's quiz question.

Why won't I be showing you the Eastern aspect of the church?

Answer as always in a week's time.

Hyde Chapel in Hiding

Hyde Chapel features regularly on this blog, especially its spire which is visible from miles around, but a close-up picture is almost impossible.

This photograph from last summer was taken across the road from Knott Lane. The chapel is well hidden behind the trees.

So what if we go right round the other side to the corner of School Road and King Edward Avenue? I did that some weeks ago but the bright winter sun was shining right over the top of the church and I couldn't shoot straight into it.

Turning away from the direct sunlight, what I did manage was a photograph across the top of the burial ground to Enfield Street and the former school that is now a nursing home.

Bowling Green Street

When I posted a picture of a bowling green in October as part of a quiz, several people correctly guessed it was in Hyde Park, but one correspondent suggested it was "the last remaining bowling green in Hyde. Funnily enough, this is on Bowling Green Street."

I had to look it up on the A-Z but located it and some weeks ago I had a walk up there.

I cannot show you the actual green as it is behind the clubhouse which was securely locked up.

Godley Brook Culvert

It seems there are two streams called Godley Brook on the map.

The Northern section starts life on Matley Moor and flows in a generally South-Westerly direction towards Newton to this point here.

The Southern section starts life on the flanks of Werneth Low and flows North towards Brookfold Farm and Godley East where it turns Westward and flows under Mottram Road to pass through Godley Vale before being culverted under the M67 motorway to join the Northern section here.

The combined stream flows under Commercial Street at Godfrey Mill and past the ABC Wax factory. I'm not entirely sure where it goes from there; it probably reaches the River Tame eventually.

Dawson Street Bridge

I've previously posted a photograph of Dawson Street.

There you can see the mill that was originally the Redfern Rubber Works. I believe the area is now divided amongst a number of light industrial users. The factory was either side of the street and the two parts are linked by this covered bridge. I don't know whether or not it is still used as a passageway.

Hare & Hounds

Remember my photograph of Cattle on the Low?

Well turn around and this is what you see, the Hare & Hounds on Werneth Low Road looking towards Four Lane Ends.

Woolley Lane

Opposite the Gun Inn at Hollingworth, the A57 from Liverpool to Sheffield via the Snake Pass turns right into Woolley Lane towards Glossop whilst the A628 carries forward down Market Street and over the Woodhead Pass to Barnsley.

Cold Busker

On the last Saturday of 2008 the temperature barely crept above freezing.

On the bench outside the Cotton Bale in the Market Place, this busker played his accordion as shoppers hurried for warmth inside somewhere/anywhere.

1823 Cottages

Walk up Stockport Road past the Werneth Hotel at the bottom of Treacle Brow and before you reach the junction where the old signpost is, you'll find this set of stone steps leading up to Mottram Old Road.

The cottages on Mottram Old Road date from 1823.

Godley Reservoir South

Walk up Barmhouse Lane and you will come to Godley Reservoir, best seen in the distance from Werneth Low.

The footpath leading down past the Southern end of the reservoir comes out near Godley Station.

The reservoir embankment can be glimpsed through the trees behind the fence from the station platform.

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas

Today is the twelfth day of Christmas when tradition dictates that we take down the decorations and pack them away until the end of the year.

Here is the Town Hall all lit up. See how it looked in 1998.

This is looking straight up Market Street with the market-traders busy packing up for the day. Can you spot the moon?

Barmhouse Lane Bridge

For our contribution on the first Monday of the month to Broer som Binder [Bridges between], we have walked up Barmhouse Lane and past Godley Reservoir.

A smaller lane leads off it and crosses the M67 motorway using this bridge. It services a farm and beyond that there are only muddy footpaths towards Matley Moor.

This is the view looking West from the bridge as the motorway heads into Hyde.

I returned back over the bridge and followed the Godley Bridleway on the South side of the motorway.

More details of and links to other participants to Broer som Binder can be found on Visual Norway.

Winter Woolies

2009 should have been the year when Woolworths celebrated its centenary.

Two years ago it looked like this.

Last month it looked like this.

This is how it looked yesterday with the shutters brought down for the final time.

Both ways from Godley

This is Godley Station on Christmas Eve 2008 with the Manchester-bound train in the distance.

This view is in the opposite direction towards Godley East, Hattersley and Glossop.

Today on Old Hyde is a photograph of the station from March 1989.

Sunset over Stockport Road (Post #1000)

Our contribution to Skywatch Friday this week is a sunset over Stockport Road looking across the Diamond Row Open Space towards King Edward Avenue.

The spire of Hyde Chapel is clearly visible on the left.

I apologise to regular readers for the necessity of emblazoning a message on the photograph.

It appears the rip-off site for whom the message was intended has now been closed down, but these things have a habit of re-appearing so I thought I'd still post this anyway.

This is Hyde Daily Photo's 1000th post.

Although nothing major is going to change here in the immediate future, I am considering a few tweaks. From now on I may decide
  • not to publish every single day.
  • to publish two or three complementary photographs together rather than a singleton.
  • to spread a series of pictures over consecutive days.
  • to publish a few more experimental compositions.
  • to find a new template.
