Morning Sky

The morning sky just a week or so ago before the clocks went back and the wind and rain came to remove most of the remaining leaves from the trees.

For more sky shots visit Skywatch Friday.

Spiral Skywatch

A view through the spiral footbridge ramp and of an aeroplane heading for Manchester Airport.

Today's photograph is a contribution to Skywatch Friday.

Pakistan International Airlines

What is a Pakistan International Airlines plane doing on Hyde DP, I hear you cry?

Remember my picture entitled In over the Low?

Did you see the aeroplane in the sky?

A few seconds later as the plane got nearer I zoomed in on it and this is what my camera captured.

In Over the Low

Last Sunday was remarkably warm and sunny for February.

In the afternoon I climbed up to the War Memorial on the top of Werneth Low.

I took quite a number of photographs which I'll be sharing with you over at least the next six weeks (not all at once).

This is looking North over Hyde in the direction of Oldham, Rochdale and Bolton.

High in the sky but getting lower is an aeroplane bound for Manchester Airport.

Rockets Galore

Between the 14th century Newton Hall and the weird chimney-pot at Dunkirk Farm, you'll find the technology of the future.

Starchaser began life as an experimental rocket test programme set up in 1992 by Steve Bennett from Dukinfield.

A few years ago the rocket was on show at Gee Cross Fete. Now they are busy recruiting astronauts.

This picture is by guest photographer Peter Parrott.

A Hyde Sky

Sky, clouds, trees, a contrail. Not much more to say, is there?

Hyde chapel and contrail

I recently showed a view looking down on Hyde Chapel from Aspland Road.

Well I followed the path down into the village and along to the chapel. Eventually I found myself looking up at the spire as a jet plane passed.

Manchester bound aircraft

I have previously shown planes flying overhead on April 11th 2006 ~~ November 30th 2006 ~~ February 3rd 2007 ~~ March 5th 2007 ~~ and I think it is time to show another.

This one is coming in over Diamond Row.

Flying in over the trees

A number of previous photos here have included Manchester Airport bound planes flying over the town.

This time I decided to make a more deliberate feature of the aircraft itself.

Yesterday, several DPs had photos of the lunar eclipse seen over much of Europe. My photos and links to the others can be seen on my Ackworth born blog.

Plane over TV aerials

We live in a semi-detached property and share a chimney with our neighbour.

Nobody has an open fire these days and the main purpose of chimneys is to be a support for television aerials. As you can tell we've got two each but they all point in the same direction, which is towards the transmitter on top of Winter Hill some thirty miles away.

The aeroplane is heading for touchdown at Manchester Airport.

Clarendon Square Shopping Centre

This is one of the entrances to Clarendon Square Shopping Centre, the one opposite the Jolly Carter as opposed to the one by the Market Ground.

Over the top is a plane flying into Manchester Airport.

Elvis is alive!

My camera is presently out of action, so I don't have many new images to post.

Also I haven't been able to upload any pictures direct into blogger. So here is an old photo from my website. It is from a set taken during the Streets Ahead Festival in 2001.

Manchester Airport Roof

As I'm away for a while, Pamela from Tenerife is posting a series of photographs from the environs of Hyde rather than the town itself.

This is the view from the roof at Manchester Airport. Hyde lies just under the hills you can see on the horizon towards the top right-hand corner.

Starchaser Rocket

June is traditionally the time for the local Gee Cross Fete. As I'm away this year, in my absence I'm displaying a series of photos from earlier years.

One year the chief attraction was Steve Bennett's Starchaser Rocket. Steve is from nearby Dukinfield.

Stagecoach bus advertising flights

Lots of the Stagecoach buses have adverts on them for a low-cost airline.

This one offers flights to Edinburgh for £19.99 single. And the price does include airport-taxes. So that is £39.98 return compared to £60.80, the cheapest option I could find with BA. The train would cost anything from £35 return if you searched around and found journeys where Apex fares applied; otherwise it would be £70.

Meanwhile a National Express coach would charge £28.50 or less if you qualified for discounts. Mind you, a taxi to Manchester Airport could set you back around £30 as opposed to £15 [much less for a bus or train] to Piccadilly Station or Chorlton Street Coach Station.

Other buses advertise flights to different destinations.

Disused Railway Line

Like many disused railway tracks in the UK, this has been turned into a footpath. The original railway line was a loop from Woodley to Broadbottom.

People use it now to walk their dogs or ride their horses.

At the top of the picture you can see an aeroplane. Hyde lies on the inbound flight path for Manchester Airport. Many of them cross the Pennines, follow the Longdendale Valley and descend over Hyde and Stockport before landing.
