A year ago I posted a photograph of
ice under Dowson Road.
A different year, a different angle, the ice is gone but rain has left the Trans Pennine trail muddy and there is a huge puddle under the bridge.

The Albion has recently had a makeover.
It has also acquired a new pub sign which you can see on
Hyde DP Xtra.
Curiously the new sign has an image of
Britannia which is very different from the old sign which depicted
a ship.

Markland Street consists of two halves. The top half, overlooking
Swains Valley Allotments, leads off the end of Haughton Street and ends above the old railway embankment.
The other half leads
off Dowson Road.
The two sections are cut off by some garages here reflected in a deep puddle.
This time last year the ground was
covered in snow.More weekend reflections can be found at

On a day of heavy rain the Ayesha Saree Emporium on Chapel Street is reflected in a huge puddle.

Last Monday 450 soldiers from the Mercian Regiment, who had recently returned from Afghanistan, marched through Hyde. Despite the heavy rain a huge crowd lined the route. This was the scene outside the market opposite the Town Hall about half an hour before the parade was to take place.

I was at the doctor's and came out after my appointment just in time to see the tail end of the march at the bottom of Market Street.

On
Hyde DP Xtra you'll find three videos of the march past and links to other reports and photographs of the event.

On the left goods are still laid out on display outside the stationers.

If all has gone well we should be home again now so here is a typical shot of Greenfield Street on a rainy day.
On the left is the side of the Town Hall. Ahead is the Asda supermarket.

The typical British Summer: two fine days and a thunderstorm!
When the heavy rain hit Hyde last Saturday the market traders hardly had time to cover their wares.
I took a shot of the Town Hall reflected in the waters across the market ground.

Another shot from the
rainy Saturday before Spring Bank Holiday.
The key-cutter on Hyde Market has a new sideline selling umbrellas.
There were still queues in the rain outside the Post Office and another queue of umbrellas leading to the cash machine at the Halifax, which you can see on
Hyde DP Xtra.

It does does it? Well I don't.
The CDPB theme is "Funny Signs". Until Saturday my proposed post was something not so much "funny ha ha" but "funny peculiar" but that can wait now for a later day.
Just a week after splashing sun blocker all over as temperatures soared, this Saturday the rains came down with a vengeance. I took this quick photo of the rain in the Market Place as I fought to keep my umbrella intact. Only later did I see the advertising sign.
All those pots lined up outside the front of £-stretcher (formerly Woolworths) were hoping to be sold to bank-holiday gardeners.

A quick look from the Eastern footbridge by Hyde bus station of traffic along the M67 on a wet afternoon a few weeks ago.
I shall be flying off to sunnier climes tomorrow (ash-clouds permitting) so you may not see me commenting on other blogs for a week or so.
Posts are scheduled to appear as normal in my absence. Don't think you can post nasty or spam comments while I'm away though as my good friend Rune of
Visual Norway will be keeping an eye on things until I get back.

This is the third of three "puddle" shots taken last Saturday week with my camera phone.
The first was
L is for Legs.
The second was
Fag ends in the Sky.
This was taken when I turned round after taking the first and looked at the sun shining straight down into a spread out puddle outside the entrance to Clarendon Mall. I moved slightly to the side so that the sun was mostly hidden behind one of the beams. When it was no longer flooding out the shot, I pressed the shutter.
As a result we end up with dark shadows of the beams as well as reflections.

I'll show you the third one tomorrow.

My intention was to photograph the reflection of the Jolly Carter in the puddle outside the Clarendon Mall, but my phone-camera is a bit slow on the uptake so instead it captured all these passing legs.

Spring is coming in like a lion this year with a lot of wet weather.
Late yesterday afternoon dark clouds hovered over Werneth Low and heavy rain arrived.
Shortly afterwards a rainbow appeared. Because of the angle of roofs and windows that don't open wide, I wasn't able to capture the full semi-circle. I was however able to catch the edge of it on the left horizon in this shot looking towards the Hare and Hounds on the right horizon.
About ten minutes after I took this photograph, the skies darkened, the rainbow disappeared and the rain returned.

Saturday was officially the first day of Spring.
It rained solidly all day.
This is Grange Road South taken with my camera-phone while I stood waiting for the bus home.

They are probably not called binmen these days but I'm sure you know what I mean.
It used to be the case that it was the binmen (refuse operatives I presume) who drove the gritters, so when the snow came the bins (that's garbage for the benefit of my american readers) didn't get emptied.
Now the thaw has come so the refuse in the large wheelie-bins at the back of the market in Clarendon Mall can be emptied.

Rain on the pavement by the pedestrianised part of the Market Place.
O and some more bollards.

This was a dry gravel footpath when
Alder High School was built alongside.
In the photograph on that earlier post it can be seen clearly on the left.
This was taken a few weeks ago after several days of heavy rain. The low bright autumn sun reflects the railings across the path and the puddles.
