Old Post Office Farm

Built in 1694 as a farmhouse, #2 Back Lane housed Mottram Post Office for many years.

Like Ye Olde Village Fish & Chip Shop next door it is a Grade II listed building.

You can read the official description on Old Hyde.

Site of Dove Farm

These stables off Green Lane are on the site of Dove Farm.

Dove Farm, built in 1675 and enlarged in 1781, was said to be haunted by hounds.

Sadly the farm was demolished in the 1970s.

Brookfold Farm 2010

I last showed you Brookfold Farm in May 2008.

This view is taken from the top of the bridge which used to carry the former Godley to Apethorn railway over Brookfold Lane which you can see on the right.

Back o' th' Hill

A week or so ago I posted February Fields. In the background was Back o' th' Hill which is farmland on the Western slope of Werneth Low.

This is some two to three miles from the Eastern edge of the Low past Windy Harbour.

February Fields

These fields are on the boundary of Gee Cross, Tameside and Woodley, Stockport.

In the background is the Western slope of Werneth Low leading to Back o' th' Hill.

I'm not sure if that is hard frost or light snow up top.

Drystone Waller at Dunkirk Farm

As I was walking from Dunkirk Bridge down to Dunkirk Farm a few weeks ago, I came across this busy chap who was repairing the dry stone wall.

I had a nice chat with him before proceeding on my way.

Farm at Broomstairs

Between this farm at Broomstairs where horses graze and the chimney of the factory behind the trees flows the River Tame.

You can see the base of the chimney in this January 2008 post of Broomstair Bridge.

Dunkirk Farm

In September 2007 I posted a photograph of an unusual chimney pot at Dunkirk Farm.

Alas, the chimney isn't there anymore and the farmhouse doesn't look to be in too good shape, so I've given this photograph the "pencil" treatment.

Seven Centuries of Contrast.

Behind the railings is Newton Hall, built in 1370 and restored in 1970.

Behind the Hall are industrial units which house the Starchaser rockets.

Starchaser began life as an experimental rocket test programme set up in 1992 by Steve Bennett from Dukinfield.

A few years ago the rocket was on show at Gee Cross Fete. Now they are busy recruiting astronauts.

The CDPB theme today is "Contrast": Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.

Beyond Green Lane Bridge

Last week I showed you over Green Lane Bridge, having previously shown you under the bridge. My correspondent Old Wom Tigley said he'd driven over the bridge recently and found it bumpy and muddy. And he wasn't wrong!

He tells me also that this field is where lapwings can sometimes be seen. I expect the tree will have grown a few leaves since this photograph was taken.

This is the bottom end of Green Lane which leads up to Mottram Old Road and Werneth Low. In the opposite direction it has been mostly obliterated by the St Pauls Hill housing estate.

Apethorn Farm

The end of Apethorn Farm is it abutts on to Apethorn Lane.

Originally a cruck-framed longhouse from the 15th century, it was encased in rubble in the 17th century and later with brick.

The scene of a murder in 1831, it was divided into cottages in 1928 but in 1993 a fire reduced to it to just the original cruck frame.

There is a pre-1920s photo on Old Hyde and also a photograph from May 2000.

Pott House Farm

Pott House Farm lies on Matley Lane near to the Rising Moon.

Posts are scheduled for the next few weeks as I expect to be without internet access for some time. In the meantime Rune Eide of Visual Norway will be keeping an eye on the blog in my absence.

M67 past Longlands

Recently I brought you Barmhouse Lane Bridge over the M67 motorway and showed you the view looking West towards Hyde.

This is the view looking East. Mid-week and mid-afternoon it may well seem very quiet, but if you look at the signs, you'll notice it is about to drop from 3 lanes to two as it approaches the end of the motorway at Hattersley. About a mile beyond this point it crosses over the lane by Westwood Farm from where there can be standing traffic.

Look closely (as always, do click on the photograph to view the larger version) and you should see a mobile phone mast. It is the same one as can be seen in another photograph from last year, Edge of Hattersley.

As I said then, Linda in Australia was seeking information about Longlands because she went to school there in the summer of 1967 but Longlands was demolished to make way for the M67 Hyde By-Pass.

This second photograph was taken from the lane leading from Tetlow Farm at the top of Barmhouse Lane to the bridge, looking across grazing land to Longlands Wood.

Where that wood is now, there used to be a school but it ain't there now!

Cattle on the Low

This was taken about ten past ten one Wednesday morning on Werneth Low Road.

"Low" derives from the Old English word hlaw meaning "round hill" - which is why Werneth Low is the highest not the lowest place in Hyde.

If you click for the bigger picture and look at the cow on the left, you might be able to see the spire of Hyde Chapel to its left and the tower of St George's Church to its right.

Westwood Farm

Westwood Farm lies off the A57 opposite the New Inn.

It is down the lane to the farm that I discovered the Poop and Scoop sign.

Safely grazing sheep

On a sunny Sunday in September, sheep graze on a Southern meadow off Mount Road.

Harrop Edge

Harrop Edge as seen from Garnett Road.

Hidden from view, behind the building on the left, is the terminal roundabout of the M67.

The A57 is on the other side of the hedge, and leads down to Mottram Junction.

Plans for a bypass around Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle from the roundabout have been drawn up and hotly debated for more than thirty five years. If it ever does get built, those green fields will look somewhat different.

Hard Times Farm

Today we come out of town to the countryside and the North-West corner of Hyde.

We are standing on Hobson Moor looking across the fields at Hard Times Farm which lies on Dewsnap Lane.

In the valley beyond is Hollingworth and the River Etherow at Woolley Bridge forming the boundary between Hyde, Tameside, Great Manchester and Glossop, High Peak, Derbyshire.

Dewsnap Lane

The theme for City Daily Photobloggers, this first of July, is Signs that say "No".

Here the "No Through Road" sign carries the additional threat/warning "No Turning Point". With two large farms down the lane, I would doubt the actuallity of the case, but if you were a stranger in a car, would you take the chance?

This is the end of Dewsnap Lane. To the left is Lumb Farm and to the right is Rabbit Lane.

To view thumbnails for all 170+ participants to the theme visit the CDPB portal
