Behind the Barbed Wire

Last Thursday I asked you what is behind the barbed wire?.

Well I don't actually know.

The building lies between Mansfield Road and the former Godley to Apethorn railway line. Access is from Back Lane/Lumn Road.

The architecture is typical of the mid-Victorian factory buildings in the area. It does look as if it could have been a church originally but old maps only mark a "Pumping Station" nearby.

It has been a while since I had a little quiz on here so time for another.

The Queens' Chimneys

Last week I asked you Where are these chimneys?.

Darryl & Ruth from Williamsburg, Virginia were almost right in suggesting they belonged to an old hotel, but Steffen from Stuttgart was more spot on by describing at as pub.

As Ian said

not every passer by will have a clue unless they walk around looking upwards

Not surprisingly, Ghost of Red Pump Street correctly identified them as belonging to The Queens on Clarendon Place.

In a Pub Cricket game, The Queens might score 12 - look at the Inn Sign - it refers to the wives of Henry VIII.

Where are these chimneys?

A quiz photo for you today.

For non-local readers, the question is, what sort of building sports these chimneys.

For local readers though the question is exactly where are these chimneys.

The answer will posted next Thursday, so to give non-locals a chance to make an intelligent (or wild) guess first, perhaps the locals will wait until after the weekend before posting their answers.

Newton St Mary's South & January Quiz

Back in November I showed you the Western aspect of St Mary's, Newton.

A few weeks later I posted a photograph of the Northern aspect.

So here now is the Southern aspect which is the main entrance into the church.

All three photographs were taken the same day.

Which brings us to this month's quiz question.

October quiz

It's quiz time again!

Who can tell me what this is? Perhaps even tell me whereabouts it might be?

September Answer

The answer to last weeks quiz is a Gas Holder.

It is part of Broad Mills Heritage Site in Broadbottom.

Broadbottom Mills were originally a collection of several textile works established by William and George Sidebottom in the early 1800s employing 1,200 people by 1860.

The mills closed during the cotton famine of the 1860s but re-opened in the 1870s under new management. The name was changed to Broad Mills in the early 20th century. The mills suffered during the 1930s depression and fire damage in 1949 resulted in their final demolition.

A program of excavation and conservation carried out since the 1980s has revealed a number of key elements within the mill complex. These include the late 19th century gasholder (built between 1872 and 1896), the sluices and channels which fed the water-wheels of the early spinning mills and the remains of an engine house of the 1830s.

Today's photograph shows the water culverts which led into a shed housing a water-wheel.

The area is part of Etherow Country Park.

Thanks to all who tried to guess what it was. I expected some (like chadders and outhouse) to go for a railway turntable as I've shown something similar before. My favourite wild guess is babooshka's elephant's birthing pool and if she lets me know (privately) her mailing address I'll send her a wee prize.

There probably wasn't as much (if any) grass nor trees around when this place was working.

Air-filters; solar panels; dirty window-screens; motorway bridge; shed were some of the quesses.

Shed and bridge come close. It is in fact the walkway up to the bridge that gives access to Hattersley Station.

Lonely Tree

When I posted a picture of the 2008 exhibition by Gee Cross Art Group, I mentioned that one of the paintings had been seen in a previous display and could anyone spot which one and the difference between then and now?

This painting by Pat Smith also appeared in the posting for 14th April 2007. The artist tells me she has changed the colour of the background and reframed it.

Sweetie Corner

Last week when I published a picture of Rock Street, I asked if anyone could guess what was written on the sign of the house on the right.

SWEETIE CORNER - I think there was a confectioner's shop here at one time.

I doubt though if it was ever as popular as Hett's Sweet Shop

Gee Cross Art Group 2008

As in previous years, the Gee Cross Art Group held an exhibition in the Methodist Church on the day of Gee Cross Fete.

One of the paintings here was seen in a previous display shown here. Can you spot which one and the difference between then and now? Answer will be revealed a week today.
