Opposite the
Gun Inn at Hollingworth, the A57 from Liverpool to Sheffield via the Snake Pass turns right into Woolley Lane towards Glossop whilst the A628 carries forward down
Market Street and over the Woodhead Pass to Barnsley.

As I was wandering around Hollingworth earlier this year I came upon this graveyard.
It appears to be well tended but is not attached to any church so far as I can tell.

Looking along the A57 from near
Hollingworth Post Office.
This was taken on a quiet Wednesday afternoon. There are a couple of heavy goods vehicles coming towards us. At peak times traffic can be at a stanstill here, backing up from the
Gun Inn to all the way past Tintwistle.

Hollingworth War Memorial is at the bottom of Mottram Moor just by the old
signpost.
It was erected by public subscription in 1925.

This old signpost and lamp near the
Gun Inn at Hollingworth is somewhat obscured by the tree behind it.
The lamp was probably originally lit by gas but is now electric.
Barnsley is 24 miles distant on the A628 over Woodhead, Manchester is 10 miles West along the A57 and Glossop is just 3 miles away.

The Gun Inn at Hollingworth is an ancient hostelry and coaching inn.
It occupies a strategic position where the A57 from Liverpool to Sheffield via the Snake Pass turns right towards Glossop whilst the A628 carries forward over the Woodhead Pass to Barnsley.

Next to Hollingworth Village Stores on Market Street is Hollingworth Post Office.
Unlike
nearby Tintwistle Post Office, it isn't threatened with closure.

Today's photograph is by Roger May. It first appeared on
Geograph British Isles and is reproduced here with the photographer's permission.
Go East from
the end of the M67 and you come to Hollingworth, a village choked by the fumes of traffic on the A628.
It shouldn't be confused with
Hollingworth Lake which is further North near Rochdale.
