Looking up Clarendon Street

This is looking up Clarendon Street from one of the footbridges over the M67.

You can see a #330 bus about to enter the Bus Station.

Standing out further up the street is the Art Deco facade of the building that I think was originally a cinema but in more recent years has housed an indoor market or supermarket.

Clarendon Street should not be confused with Clarendon Road, Clarendon Place nor the Clarendon Shopping Centre, which are all separate places.

Theatre Royal Open Days 2007

I took this photograph of Corporation Street yesterday morning.

On the left is the side and rear of the Town Hall. I don't know why the flag isn't flying as it flys most days.

On the right is the Theatre Royal.

There is a new website now for Hyde Theatre Royal Onward, the company set up to save this historic theatre for the town.

The theatre will be open as part of Heritage Open Days on the 7th & 8th September 2007.

Photographs from the 2006 Open Day can be found at http://www.geraldengland.co.uk/gx/royal.htm

The End of Dowson Road

This is the end of Dowson Road.

You can just see the 346 bus waiting to move round into Stockport Road to start its journey through Gee Cross.

Compare this with the picture on Old Hyde.

Dowson Road now leads straight into Stockport Road towards Woodley, whilst the section of Stockport Road through Gee Cross meets Dowson Road at a T-junction and must give way. The trees have grown and only the steeple of Hyde Chapel is visible. The open fields on the old picture are filled with houses, though screened from view by the trees.

Cheshire Cheese Inn Sign

Here is the Inn Sign for the Cheshire Cheese.

Which one? I hear you cry - since the town has three such pubs.

Well it is the one on Market Street.

No sunflowers this year

Last year the flower-bed at the side of the Town Hall on Greenfield Street had a lovely display of sunflowers.

Here is what is there now, and the adjacent toilet blocks are closed down.

Hyde Mill Tower

Last year I showed you a photo of Hyde Mill.

I took another photograph recently. The place hasn't changed much so this focuses on the tower.

Canopy 2004

Early in July I showed a closeup of the Ironwork on the shelter by the Post Office.

Looking through some older photographs I found this 2004 picture which shows a little more of the canopy.

"Bulls Eyes" (not Bottle) Window

I recently noticed this window on a house in Reynold Street.

I believed this type of window was called a "Bottle Window". My own research into it drew only blanks, but the DP family came up trumps and correctly identified it as a "Bulls Eyes" Window.

Caravans

These caravans are parked in the yard of the town's local caravan dealer.

Some people seem to hate touring caravans and regard them as eyesores or slow-coaches clogging up country roads.

We were caravanners for around eight years when the children were growing up and found it an enjoyable way to spend holidays touring the UK and weekends sociallising with other caravanners at nearby rallies.

#500 Hyde Town Hall

This is the five hundredth post on Hyde DP.

I nearly gave you two photographs for the price of one, as I was going to post a picture of Hyde Town Hall 1907 which appeared on Old Wom Tigley's Wiggers World blog [dead link removed] together with a poem by Joshua Bradley about the opening of Hyde Town Hall Clock and Bells, October 18th 1884.

100 years ago you could see the building clearly in all its glory. Now with trees, traffic and street furniture, such a view is impossible.

I recently acquired a number of old prints and photographs of Hyde. I also know of such material elsewhere. I have therefore created a companion blog, Old Hyde where I shall be publishing non-contemporary items.

Looking towards Harrop Edge

We are here crossing the A560 from Ashworth Lane to Underwood Road in Hattersley and looking towards the roundabout at the end of the M67.

The high ground beyond is Harrop Edge.

Hidden from view behind the tree on the left is McDonalds, affectionately known by some as "The American Embassy!"

Cheshire Cheese (3)

I've already shown you the Cheshire Cheese in Gee Cross and the one on Market Street.

Here is the third Cheshire Cheese on the corner of Bennett Street and Ashton Road, Newton.

Tunnel

If you walk from Newton (for Hyde) station into town, you'll go down Commercial Street.

Before you reach the entrance to ABC Wax and the footbridge over the motorway, you'll come to this tunnel which goes under the motorway and brings you out into Morrison's car park.

This was taken a few weeks ago. At the entrance to the tunnel was a large puddle of water maybe three inches deep. Along with other rubbish there were some pieces of discarded carpet which acted as stepping stones. It was very bleak and eerie so I probably won't come this way again.

Raindrops on the Hydrangea

After a week of lovely warm sunshine, the weather has turned again and it has gone cold and we've had some heavy rain.

I've been very much under the weather myself but we carry on regardless. This evening as I put out the wheelie bin I noticed the raindrops glistening on the big hydrangea bush and took this picture.

Stop & Clock

As you can see from this close-up of the Market Place Bus Shelter, its roof is in need of a certain amount of renovation.

In the background is the Town Hall clock.

Crane

This crane is flying over Dowson Road.

It is being used in the construction of the retirement apartments being built on the site of the former car showrooms demolished last year.

Having viewed the plans and seen others in the area, we've decided that, apart from anything else, they are outside our budget, so we'll be setting our sights somewhat lower on the ground.

This view of Holy Trinity is taken not far away from where I took this recent photo of Hyde Chapel.

Stonepit Reservoir not quite ready

Earlier this week I saw them laying some tarmac down inside the entrance to Stonepit reservoir. Now it looks as though they've planted some reeds around the edges. The top of the water seems to be covered by a dark film of some sort.

Cheshire Cheese (2)

When I showed you the Cheshire Cheese in Gee Cross and said it was one of three in the town, you were all gagging to see the other two.

Well here is the one on Market Street, Hyde opposite the end of Union Street.

Ashton Bros Mill demolition

I earlier posted a photo of Ashton Bros Mill by guest photographer Frank Bennett.

This is also by Frank and shows the mill actually in the process of being demolished.

It was probably taken from more or less the same vantage position as my recent photo of the Funfair leaving town.

Path to Gower Hey Wood

When I posted the Village Green Well 2007, Elizabeth said
I was in the Brownies and Guides at 1st Gee Cross and the guider for several years at 2nd Gee Cross - we had a little hut on Silverhill Road, which I believe is still there - picture one day possibly Gerald?

Well first I had to find Silverhill Road but my A-Z yielded the answer. What I discovered there was a row of wooden garages. The end was a double and might have been big enough for use by the brownies but there was nothing to indicate that and I didn't feel like photographing them.

Just round the corner though, I found this delightful footpath that leads down to Gower Hey Wood.

View from the 330 to Stockport

I wonder if this young chap reading his newspaper at the Market Place bus shelter is aware that the structure is a Grade II listed building.

Baron Road Well

I've already posted pictures of Booths Well and the Village Green Well this year.

Baron Road Well is the responsibility of 3rd Gee Cross Scouts, who in this centenary year of the scouting movement are locally fighting for funds to replace their storm-damaged hut.

Hyde chapel and contrail

I recently showed a view looking down on Hyde Chapel from Aspland Road.

Well I followed the path down into the village and along to the chapel. Eventually I found myself looking up at the spire as a jet plane passed.

Grapes Hotel 2007

The Grapes Hotel is where the Gee Cross Well Dressing Ceremony departs from. It lies next to Booths Well.

It rained on the Sunday this year so I didn't go to look at the wells until the Monday. Hence it is not as busy as it was in this earlier picture from 2003.

Etched window

An etched window at Hyde Town Hall.

It stems from the days when Hyde was a Borough in its own right and not part of the conglomerate that is known as Tameside Metropolitan Borough in the geographic creation entitled Greater Manchester.

Breakfast

This month's CDPB theme is "typical breakfast". Here is what they offer at Morrison's supermarket. An English breakast traditionally consists of bacon & egg with sundry extras such as baked beans, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding, fried bread. It is usually preceeded by cereal and/or fruit juice and followed by toast, all washed down with a nice pot of tea. It is enough to last most people for the whole of the day.

At home we regularly just have fruit juice and cereal (sometimes porridge). We do have bacon and egg once a week on Wednesdays.

Lots of cafés serve breakfast until about 11.30am whilst others do an "all-day breakfast". If we are out together, my wife and I will often split a single all-day-breakfast between us.
