Bird in the Bush

Since it is the end of May and we are supposedly well past Spring and into Summer, I thought I'd end the month with a picture of this pretty little bird sitting on the rose bush outside my window.

Traffic Jam outside Cheshire Ring

A juggernaut turning right out of Great Norbury Street in front of the Cheshire Ring is causing a bit of a traffic jam!

Looking Through Pipes

Remember that Stack of pipes I showed you recently.

They are probably well buried now but here is a look through one.

St Michael's and All Angels

St Michael's and All Angels church at Mottram in Longdendale dominates the skyline in many directions. This particular view was taken from Ashworth Lane.

The first church here was probably in the 13th century. As the Parish website informs us
The present church dates from the end of 15th century. The building of the tower was supported by a bequest from Sir Edmund Shaa, a native of the area who rose to fame and fortune in London and died in 1488. It is possible that the whole of the outside walls were rebuilt at the same time, perhaps as an enlargement of the existing building. In 1855 the church underwent a major restoration under the direction of local architect E.H. Shellard, during which the height of the nave roof was raised, allowing for much more imposing clerestory windows.

We do have Litter

A while back, someone remarked that they hadn't seen much litter in my photographs and suggested Hyde might be a clean place.

I replied saying that the problem was probably no better nor worse than in most towns around the UK and if she hadn't seen much here it was probably because I don't normally go around photographing litter. Not strictly true as I have previously highlighted the post smoking-ban litter problem.

I took this from one of the footbridges over the M67.

There is actually rather more litter strewn down the embankment than shown here, but when cropping I decided to highlight the gorse bushes rather than the rubbish.

Sam Redfern Green

Sam Redfern Green is the site of the annual Gee Cross Fete.

In the 1860s it was the Queen Adelaide Reservoir but like others in the area it has long since been drained, covered and grassed over.

#777

This is Hyde DP post #777.

I took this picture of the Kingston Car Wash from the top deck of a bus.

The reflection in the bus window affords you a clear view of the line of terraced houses with their distinctive chimney pots from across the road.

Gee Cross in Springtime

I've shown a close-up picture of the old signpost in Gee Cross before, and another from the other direction.

This time I've taken a picture from further back at the bottom of Hill Street from where you can see the tree on the corner between Mottram Old Road and Stockport Road in full bloom.

In the 1920s tramlines ran down Stockport Road and where the tree is now there was a house - see this picture on Old Hyde.

Behind the Fire Station

Behind the Fire Sation on Railway Street is the railway line from Hyde Central towards Romiley.

You can't see that of course.

What you can see is the Adamson Factories behind the railway.

Beyond Adamsons is the canal.

Rabbit Lane

Followers of Wigger's World may think they've seen this picture before. Indeed that is Tom's Landrover, but my photograph is from a slightly different angle.

This is the bottom of Rabbit Lane taken through the windscreen. We've already driven past the prettiest of the cottages.

Tom went back another day for a Walk down Rabbit Lane and his collection of posts will give you a good insight into life on the edge of Hyde.

It's Nelson again

Nelson is a two-year old parrot who loves to go walking around the Market Place.

We last saw him a year ago outside a florists.

Stack of pipes

These pipes were stacked next to Prima e Dopo near the big Hole in the Road I showed you recently.

They are destined to replace the old gas main under the road.

PS I had intended to publish a quiz photo here today. I'm taking a last-minute break next weekend and may not be following blogs as closely as I usually do, so the quiz is postponed to 8th June. Daily posts will continue as normal.

Low End Farm

Low End Farm snuggles under the shelter of Werneth Low.

It used to be the home of a herd of beef cattle and for a long time they delivered our daily pinta.

Now our milk is delivered from a dairy in the Hope Valley.

Theatre Royal: Frieze detail (2)

I recently featured the frieze from the top of the Theatre Royal Onward.

This is the second of two photographs showing part of the frieze in more detail. Do click on the picture above to see it at its best.

The first one was from the right hand side of the frieze. This one is a detail of part of the coat of arms.

Corner with heathers

When I recently featured the new trees at the corner of Corporation Street and Market Street, and I mentioned that some heather had been added since, several of you wanted to see.

So here you are.

Queen Adelaide Inn Sign

It is Q week at ABC Wednesday. There are two obvious candidates for featuring on Hyde DP.

First there is The Queens in the town centre with its guard dog and an inn sign that portrays the six wives of Henry VIII.

Second is the Queen Adelaide in Gee Cross.

I've already posted a photograph of the inn sign that is round the side of the pub next to a plaque with information about Queen Adelaide.

Today I'm going with the second candidate and am posting a photo of the sign that is on the front of the QA.

Miniature Castle

This Miniature Castle, seen from across the fields, is really just part of a farmhouse.

Originally eighteen century, but with later additions, it is a Grade II Listed building.

There is a photograph of the front, dated 2000, on Old Hyde where it is erroneously said to be off Matley Lane. It is actually about a mile or so away from there.

Johnson Brook Road

Last week I showed you the Road Tunnel at Hyde North.

This is the other side. Johnson Brook Road is a rough cobbled street that ends by the tunnel leading through to Junction Road.

For most of its length the Johnson Brook forms the boundary between Hyde and Dukinfield.

At last, the post you've all been waiting for (some of you at least).

I am finally able to bring you a photograph of a man fishing at Stonepit Reservoir.

L S Lowry

It was recently brought to my attention that Mottram-in-Longdendale, Hollingworth and indeed Broadbottom all have an SK14 postcode and that I should try and include more photographs from these areas.

L.S. Lowry, lived in Mottram from 1948 until his death in 1976. This bronze statue of Lowry seated on a bench is located next to the junction of Hyde Road and Stalybridge Road.

There is a close-up picture of the statue on my photoblog Sithenah.

A commemorative plaque can also be found on Lowry's former home, "The Elms" on Stalybridge Road.

Local duo Brian & Michael created a new audience for Lowry when they recorded their One Hit Wonder Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs. You can hear them talking about it today on Old Hyde.

Pole Bank Pond

Pole Bank Hall, once the home of the Ashton family, is now a private nursing home. The grounds however are a public park.

One of its best attractions is this pool.

There is another photograph of The Pond at Pole Bank on Sithenah and a vintage picture of Pole Bank Hall on Old Hyde. Additional photographs and further information are to be found on my Pole Bank Perambulation at Ackworth born, gone West.

Corner

Another view of the new trees planted outside the Town Hall at the corner of Corporation Street.

This was taken some weeks ago, before the gas men started laying the new main.

Some heather plants have been added since.

Tunnel at Hyde North

This short tunnel at the end of Junction Road goes under two railway lines and comes out onto Johnson Brook Road.

Steps on the right lead up to Hyde North Station, on the line from Marple and Romily to Manchester.

The line from Glossop via Flowery Field also crosses over this tunnel before joining the line from Marple.

342 boarding

Here we have a number 342 bus (Back Bower circular) being boarded at the Bus station. The bus just passing it is probably a number 204 (Piccadilly via Haughton Green).

Most people didn't seem to understand Thursday's number question.

Several came up with the answer 42; obviously like me they are fans of Douglas Adams.

Kuanyin from Maui got nearest but was hardly half way there and for the wrong reason, whilst Marley from Cheltenham's astute guess was way over the top.

The correct answer to what all the numbers in each photograph in the collage add up to is

20,569.85

Thanks to all who attempted an answer.

On Sunday May 18th I intend doing another "What is it?" post.

Numbers of Numbers

With the numbers of blogs that sign up for the CDPB theme every month mushrooming, I was in more than a single mind whether to participate or not.

When I looked through some of the photographs published here over the last couple of years I was quite taken aback by the sheer number of numbers I'd use.

So what does all this add up to? There's a book prize waiting for the person who comes up with the nearest accurate answer. I might even give away a few runner-up prizes. No clues given and no questions answered along the way. I'll reveal all on Saturday.

Over 180 blogs are taking part in the theme this month. To view thumbnails for all participants visit the CDPB portal
