Gardeners Arms

The Gardeners Arms on Lumn Road is a pub with a long history. In May it was boarded up but now it has found new landlords and is open for business again.

As can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra, the nearby Globe Inn has not fared so well.

For more G posts visit ABC Wednesday.

The Neighbourhood Police

Chris and Rick are two PCSOs who can be found some Saturdays between 11am and 1pm manning the Police surgery in Clarendon Mall where they give out advice on Security and Crime Prevention.

They are part of the Werneth Neighbourhood Policing Team. They even have their own page on Facebook

Hyde Market reflected in a notice-board

This was taken last Saturday by the entrance to Clarendon Square Shopping Centre.

Hyde Market and the White Lion are reflected in the notice board advertising forthcoming matches at Hyde F.C.

In the Senior Cup match United Reserves beat City Reserves 3-1.

Bankfield Hotel 2010

When I last posted a photo of the Bankfield Hotel on Mottram New Road in September 2008 I didn't know much about its history.

Now, I am informed, it was once famous for its pleasure gardens known as Bowkers Gardens, after Joshua Bowker the proprietor. The gardens were a popular resort for the people of Hyde and surrounding townships. A band pavilion stood in the gardens, and in front of it was a spacious platform for dancing. At nights there were balloon ascents and illuminations, and the place was run as a sort of miniature Belle Vue.

This, further information and an old photograph of the hotel can be found on Hyde Cheshire.

The Bankfield is no longer a hotel but it looks as if its conversion into residential accomodation has been done more sympathetically than some other conversions.

Nature is Back

A few months ago I asked Where have all the flowers gone? and showed you this railway cutting wall where the Trans Pennine Trail passes under Stockport Road all "tidied up".

Well it hasn't quite got to the state it had reached in August 2006 but is certainly getting there.

Floorbrite

One of the nicest things about the Clarendon Mall is the way they manage to keep the floors bright and shining.

Accidents happen and kids drop food on the floor but there is always someone around to cheerfully clean up the messes that happen.

Preparing for the Cup Match

Manchester City Reserves play Manchester United Reserves at Ewen Fields tonight in the Senior Cup. It is a competition that has been held since 1885 which was the year when Hyde F.C. were formed.

Yesterday morning the ground was being prepared for the match.

This is the Walker Lane end of the ground.

You can see the Tinkers Passage end on Hyde DP Xtra.

Ridling Lane from the end of Nelson Street
or is it the end of Travis Street?

Ridling Lane is an ancient route through the area.

This section is from the end of Nelson Street leading up to Lumn Road and the now closed Globe Inn.

The name-plate on the corner clearly reads "Nelson Street" but on street maps it is marked as Travis Street. At the junction of Travis Street and Nelson Street another name-plate also marks it as "Nelson Street" as can be seen on Streetview.

The Length of Nelson Street

Not actually the whole length of Nelson Street but the straight section from the corner with Travis Street.

Half-way along on the left is Douglas Street.

On the right towards the end is #17, Nelson Street before the junction with Market Street.

Behind us a short section leads to Ridling Lane which I'll show you tomorrow.

The full colour version of this photograph can be seen on Geograph.

The Leading Edge

Since I showed you this section of Dowson Road in July 2009 the premises on the corner have re-opended as the Leading Edge Health and Beauty Salon.

Unlike the Hot Crumpet next door, the last time I passed by, it didn't appear to very busy but maybe that will change.

I can't help but notice that the tyre sign is still flying above.

ABC Wednesday:
Entrance to Gower Hey Wood

I last showed you this entrance off the TransPennine Trail into Gower Hey Woods in August 2008.

Some of the fencing seems to be new and some appears to be charred. The big offical notice board has disappeared (I can't remember seeing it there for more than a year now) and there is a little notice pinned up about a missing dog.

For more E posts visit ABC Wednesday.

Tree Tower and Pillar Box

The pillar box is on Market Street.

The tower belongs to St George's Church.

I don't know anything about the tree.

Douglas Street

Douglas Street originally ran between Nelson Street and Queen Street.

The James North mill used to occupy the land on both sides of Douglas Street.

When North's was demolished, the middle of Queen Street ceased to exist. At the Market Street end a short length gives access to Greenfield School.

The school lies to the right of Douglas Street here. A footpath leads to Mona Street.

From the Clock roundabout a new road James Drive services the new housing estate on the factory site.

James Drive runs down to where the middle section of Queen Street was. That bit of Queen Street (turn left at the top of the photograph) between the end of James Drive and of Douglas Street was renamed as a continuation of Douglas Street. The end of Queen Street where it met Lumn Road is now just a stub giving access to the rear of houses on Lumn Road.

To prevent James Drive and Douglas Street becoming a rat-run through the new housing estate, these bollards at the bottom of the photograph close it off from Nelson Street.

Alighting from the 201

I thought I'd try another Tenin-esque shot like the one I posted for our fourth anniversary.

This shows passengers alighting from the #201 bus from Hattersley to Manchester at the bus stop on Clarendon Place.

A straightened full colour version can be seen on Geograph.

Reflections in the Doorway of the White Lion

The light above the doorway to the White Lion is reflected in the façade.

To the left of the doorway is a newly erected plaque commemorating the 125th anniversary of the formation of Hyde Football Club. You can see a closer view of the plaque on Hyde DP Xtra.

A Bit of Magic in the Mall

This post originally showed a photo of a local magician. Although taken quite legally and with verbal permission I have since been informed that the artist's agent now owns his image and I will be sued if I do not remove it. I can't be doing with the hassle so have removed it - it's his loss not mine.

War-time Relic on Rosemary Drive.

A few weeks ago I showed you shadows on Rosemary Drive.

This is the other end of the drive where it joins Stockport Road.

Next to the electricity substation is a telegraph pole and then a larger pole on top of which is an old air-raid siren from WWII.

George Wain, an art teacher at Hyde Grammar School, was also an amateur film maker.

During WWll he was commissioned by "The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents" to make road safety films for school children.

The film of his trip to Sutton in Surrey, and London, and his return home to Dowson Road and his family during the summer of 1942 can be seen on Old Hyde.

Dowson Road from a Double-Deck Bus

Dowson Road was built in the 1930s to bypass Gee Cross and was named after Henry Enfield Dowson.

This section, viewed from the upper deck of a double-deck bus, is heading down into Hyde from just past Knott Lane. You can see another double-decker coming in the opposite direction.

The road was resurfaced in November 2009 when I showed you a view of the roadworks from the lower deck of a bus.

Two more views of Dowson Road from the upper deck can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

More D posts can be found via ABC Wednesday.

A few shoes and some carpets

Late one afternoon last week I was by the market. Most of the tradesmen were getting ready to pack up their stalls. I took a quick photo of a few shoes and some rolls of carpet.

Lamb Inn 2010

The Lamb Inn is just down Stockport Road from the Cheshire Cheese but on the opposite side.

It didn't look much different when I posted a photograph of it in 2008, but it looked very different a century ago.

This is because the original inn was demolished about half a century ago and a new building erected higher up the road.

The old inn stood on what is now the car park.

June Reflections in the Peak Forest Canal

I took this photograph on the 30th June 2010.

The willows are hanging over the canal nicely and the new houses on the site of the former Automaster's Works are taking shape.

Compare this view with previous views of the Peak Forest Canal from Manchester Road:For further weekend reflections visit Newtown Area Photo.

Path to Mona Street

This footpath leads from Douglas Street to Mona Street and Vernon Street.

On the left is Greenfield Primary School built on the site of the former James North factory.

On the right is a recreation ground of which you can see more on Hyde DP Xtra.

With all the strewn leaves it looks a bit like autumn but in fact the photograph was taken in July.

Buttercup Meadow

Remember my shadow shot post of Rosemary Drive?

Turn around and over the fence is a meadow full of buttercups.

The buildings in the background are part of the now abandoned Hyde campus of Tameside College.

Cheshire Cheese, Gee Cross, 2010

This is the Cheshire Cheese on Stockport Road in Gee Cross.

It is not to be confused with the Cheshire Cheese in Newton, nor the Cheshire Cheese in Broadbottom, featured today on Hyde DP Xtra.

See how it looked in 1982 and much earlier on Old Hyde.

Horses at the Top of Apethorn Lane

A few days ago I was on the top deck of the #330 going to Stockport.

As it approached Smith Knight Fay I spotted two horses and their riders turning from Stockport Road into Apethorn Road.

Danby Road

This is Danby Road. It looks busy but I suspect many of the cars may belong to commuters who have caught the train to Manchester from nearby Newton (for Hyde) Station.

Village Green Well 2010

[click on image to see it full size]

The CDPB theme today is Bright Colours so I thought this would be the right day to show you the 2010 Village Green Well. The display was made using flowers and other organic ingredients as part of the 2010 Gee Cross Well Dressing celebrations.

This year Girlguiding UK celebrates 100 years of Guiding. The girls who turned up at the 1909 Crystal Palace rally called themselves Girl Scouts but Baden Powell decided that Girl Guides would be a better name for these pioneering young women. Today there are ten million girls and women involved in the movement worldwide.

Other 2010 displays include ones by:More information about the Well Dressings can be found at Gee Cross Well Dressing 2006
