Motorbike

I came across this motorbike parked illegaly on double-yellow lines by the Market Place.

As I stopped to take a photograph, the owner appeared and drove it away.

Steel-shutter Artwork

When I first noticed this, I thought it was some graffitti, but it would appear to be the work of a true artist. It is painted on the steel shutters of this barber's shop on Market Street.

Waiting for the bus

Whilst waiting for my bus, I took a picture of the seats in the Bus Station.

Whilst certainly more comfortable than those "half-benches" on which one could barely perch, in the old bus station, they are very cold to sit on.

My bus is parked up while the driver takes a quick break.

Tulips

Today's picture is dedicated to Isabella of Naples, Florida who has just reached her 100th post.

Big bunches of tulips in Zurich are 75 francs a bunch, which is around £30, although you can get smaller bunches for around £12.

Here on Hyde Market yesterday they were £1.60 a bunch [thats about 3 US dollars or 2 euros].

Down in Brighton, they are a little dearer, but very reasonable at £2.95 a bunch.

Below the Dome

Last week I asked people what lay under this dome and one person correctly identified it as Woolworths.

Here is the full picture and yet again a single photograph has provided material for three separate posts.

Warning sign

This warning sign appears outside Ewen Field football stadium.

Abuse, both on and off the field, is being taken very seriously in English football these days. One has to wonder though how many offenders actually read, let alone heed, warning signs such as these.

Art-deco roof

This building across the road from Frilly Milly's is currently a small superstore selling discounted goods.

Previously it was quite a thriving two-storey indoor market with lots of different stalls and a well-loved cafe. Now there is retailing only on the ground floor.

Originally it was the Hippodrome Cinema.

This is picture of the multi-storey car park from a different vantage point than the one I posted in September.

Hyde Central Station

Hyde Central is one of seven railway stations, the others being Flowery Field, Godley, Hyde North, Hattersley, Broadbottom and Newton for Hyde.

Access to Romily-bound trains here is via a ramp to the left of this picture, and to Manchester-bound trains through an archway and up some steps.

Beyond the bridge over Great Norbury Street, you can see the Cheshire Ring public house on Manchester Road.

Ready for more snow

Last night I watched a TV programme about some of the worst snowstorms to grip the UK. At one stage, the presenter said that Britain was "institutionally unprepared" for snow.

So far this winter we've only had two spells of heavy snow.

Are we ready for it?

This grit-box on Mottram Old Road is hopefully full of salt. I haven't actually looked inside. For all I know it could be empty.

Bowling in Hyde Park

Bowling is a popular sport in the UK, even when the weather is cold.

This green is inside Hyde Park.

Dome (quiz)

This dome lies atop a building in Hyde.

So here's a little quiz for this week? What lies underneath. Want some clues? OK well two things:
  1. It isn't public toilets this time
  2. The building has appeared in at least one other photograph published here -- that's out of more than 300.

Answer will be revealed in a week's time.

Cleaning up on the Market

I recently a posted a picture of the market all empty and Kate in Mazatlan said
"Looks lonesome without all the vendors."
so here is a picture of a busy stall that sells all manner of cleaning products and sundries.

Behind it is the little children's carousel.

Borough Arcade

As Lynn remarked recently
"Finding a NHS - National Health Service - dentist to treat your pearly whites in the UK at the moment is like pulling teeth"

My dentist is housed in the middle storey of this building on the right-hand side of Borough Arcade, and I'm off this morning for a check-up. So long as you visit him twice a year, you'll remain registered.

The upper storey houses a gymnasium and the ground floor is occupied by a shop selling stationery, art & craft supplies and cheap printer ink.

Tameside Leisure Pool

Tameside Leisure Pool or Hyde Leisure Pool as it now seems to be called is on Walker Lane near the Globe Inn.

According to the Tameside MBC website
Tameside Leisure Pool is a water wonderland for all the family. The main Lagoon Pool has a gently shelving beach area, 80m water slide, wave machine, wild water channel, cannons, fountains and much more. The "Altered Images" Fitness Studio has hi-tech cardi-vascular and resistance training equipment and computer designed individual exercise programmes housed in a fully air-conditioned area. There's a Health Suite with sauna and steam rooms and the latest fast tanning equipment to enjoy, a poolside cafe and licensed bar. A floodlit stadium with an all weather synthetic pitch hosts a wide range of outdoor sports.

There is more information and even a video to be found on the Tameside Sports Trust website.

This was taken at the same time as the picture I posted last week looking across to Longdendale. Turning towards my left slightly I got this shot of the moors above Godley.

Woolworths

A couple of days ago Lynn posted a picture of Woolworths in Cheltenham.

Here is a picture of the Hyde branch.

Lynn's post has a link to the history of the company and another to a sample of views of how customers see the shops today.

I'm late posting this because I couldn't get into the old blogger and have been forced to move to the new blogger. I didn't want to do it ...

Bandstand in Hyde Park

Last week I posted a picture of a building that carried a plaque stating: Awarded National Lottery Funding. I asked people to guess the nature of the building.

Dave from the Outhouse Capital of Canada was the first to correctly guess that the building is a toilet block.

Lottery money was used in 2005 to renovate Hyde Park -- the one in Hyde, not the one in London!

Several projects were undertaken in the park, not just the building of new public toilets. One was the refurbishment of the bandstand.

Talking of public toilets; the loos in Clarendon Shopping Mall were closed on Jan 1st for "refurbishment" . For four weeks we've been trotting off to use the ones by the Town Hall. At the end of January these were closed down permanently. I don't see why they were shut down at all, but even so, surely they could have been reprieved for a few weeks until the ones in Clarendon re-open!

It's a longer trail down to Morrisons or Asda.

As recorded on Kaz's blog you can't even rely on supermarket loos.

On my other blog I've still got a truth meme up: Five Things You Don't Know About Me (of which, only four are true). There's been just a few comments there so far; I'm not revealing the truth until a some more folk respond. Do take a butchers.

Hyde United Football Club

Affectionately known as The Tigers, Hyde United FC play in the Nationwide Conference North League. Their reserve team play in the Lancashire League.

A club called simply Hyde FC, formed in 1885, holds the dubious honour of suffering a 26-0 defeat at the hands of Preston North End in an FA Cup tie at Deepdale in 1887, still a record score for a competitive match in England.

The present club was formed in 1919.

Plane over TV aerials

We live in a semi-detached property and share a chimney with our neighbour.

Nobody has an open fire these days and the main purpose of chimneys is to be a support for television aerials. As you can tell we've got two each but they all point in the same direction, which is towards the transmitter on top of Winter Hill some thirty miles away.

The aeroplane is heading for touchdown at Manchester Airport.

300th post

Today is Hyde DP's 300th post. I thought I'd show you my computer. Nestled under the monitor is my trusty Fuji S602Z camera with which the majority of the pictures have been taken.

Shortly after taking what was our 200th post picture, I dropped the camera.

The damage was actually fairly superficial and my local camera shop was able to repair it for a reasonable charge. Meanwhile I picked up a little Olympus F130 at a bargain price.

Whilst not producing pictures of the same quality as the Fuji, it is perfectly aquedate for most purposes. It slips in the pocket and is more discreet. Whilst I now use it quite a bit and it took this photo, I'll be using the Fuji for my best pictures and whenever we go away on holiday again.

One of the joys of doing Hyde DP is getting to know other bloggers. The shoe mug was part of a gift parcel I received from Conny who runs Saarbrücken DP.

Around fifty DP blogs are participating in a theme post today. As I felt this month's subject, Something that annoys, inappropriate for my 300th post, I'm running the theme on my personal blog, Ackworth born, gone West, which is where you'll find links to the other theme participants.
