Dawson Street, looking North

I showed you Dawson Street in November 2008.

This is the view in the opposite direction looking under the Dawson Street Bridge which originally connected two seperate parts of the Redfern Rubber Works.

Nowadays various small businesses occupy what is known as the Redfern Industrial Estate.

Brookfold Farm 2010

I last showed you Brookfold Farm in May 2008.

This view is taken from the top of the bridge which used to carry the former Godley to Apethorn railway over Brookfold Lane which you can see on the right.

Oakland Furniture Store

The Oakland Furniture store on the corner of Russel Street is a well established business.

I've had a few dealings with them over the years and have always found them helpful.

Green Lane Bridge Sideways

I've previously shown you Green Lane bridge from the East and over the bridge from the North.

This is looking Southwards down the side of the bridge.

It crosses the former Godley to Apethorn Railway line. This section is now part of the Trans Pennine Trail.

Ethel Austin gone

Since I reported here in February that the Ethel Austin store was closing down, the deed has been done and now it has gone.

Tameside Animal Shelter Shop

The Tameside Animal Shelter has a charity shop on Reynold Street.

The kennels themselves are at the end of Raglan Street by the Peak Forest Canal.

Weekend Reflections:
Godley Green

This is Green Lane at Godley Green.

It is part of the Trans Pennine Trail which stretches from Southport on the West coast via Liverpool to Hull and Hornsea on the East coast.

In the other direction from here it goes North down Green Lane towards the old Godley to Apethorn railway as you can see on Hyde DP Xtra.

For an even closer look at the reflection in the puddle, vist Ackworth born, gone West.

Check out more weekend reflections at Newtown Area Photos.

Last Orders for St George

Today is St George's Day and the "Last Orders" is decorated with flags in celebration.

The "Last Orders" used to be the "Clarendon Hotel" and you can see how it looked in 1990 on Old Hyde.

The celebrations are also going on at the "White Lion" as you can see on Hyde DP Xtra.

Rails under Wood End

It was back in October 2007 that I showed you the Southbound track from the bridge on Wood End Lane.

Two and a half years later and a different season, here is the Northbound track heading towards Hyde Central and Manchester Piccadilly.

Napier Street

Napier Street lies off Osborne Road and is a typical suburban street of mainly terraced houses.

For the benefit of readers who are not familiar with the term "terraced houses", this Wikipedia page explains quite well.

For more N posts visit ABC Wednesday.

Rowbotham Street 2010

This is the top of Rowbotham Street at its junction with Stockport Road as it looks now.

See how it looked in 1984 on Old Hyde.

See how it looks further down the street on Hyde DP Xtra.

Dr & Herbs

About five or six years ago Beijing Herbs opened a shop in Clarendon Mall.

A few years later it became part of the Dr & Herbs chain.

Since some months ago it appears to have ceased trading, but strangely the doors haven't been shuttered as usually happens when firms move out of one of the units.

According to this annoucement [dead link deleted]
The ownership has transferred from Dr&HERBS Ltd (in Liquidation) to YAWYE Ltd effective as of 26th February 2010 (YAWYE stands for You Are What You Eat).
I've not been able to garner any further information about what is happening here.

Meadow Street

This is Meadow street.

I suppose there must have been a green field around here sometime.

One side of the street is lined with terraced houses, the other with various industrial units.

Behind me are more workshops and a car showroom.

Across the end of the road is the Clarkes Arms on the corner of Lumn Road.

The bird is probably on its way from Hyde Cemetery to St George's Church.

Ice Cream and Black Puddings

I've shown you the ice-cream van outside the White Lion before. Indeed it sparked several people into providing a cartoon caption.

I've also shown you the Black Pudding stall before.

Now you can see both of them together on the Saturday market.

M67 on a wet afternoon

A quick look from the Eastern footbridge by Hyde bus station of traffic along the M67 on a wet afternoon a few weeks ago.

I shall be flying off to sunnier climes tomorrow (ash-clouds permitting) so you may not see me commenting on other blogs for a week or so.

Posts are scheduled to appear as normal in my absence. Don't think you can post nasty or spam comments while I'm away though as my good friend Rune of Visual Norway will be keeping an eye on things until I get back.

Getting a Parking Ticket

The traffic warden is about to slap a parking ticket on the windscreen of the VW parked on double-yellow lines.

After she does so, she takes a photograph of the front and rear of the car and of the parking restriction sign.

Why she didn't ticket the other cars lower down the street I don't know.

Masts on Werneth Low Road

These communication masts on Werneth Low Road are just up the road from Windy Harbour.

They can be seen in older views from 1993 and 1999 on Old Hyde.

Under the Railway at Godley Hill

This archway lies halfway down Station Road, Godley.

To the right the road leads to the old Godley Junction station.

To the left the road leads down to the Godley Arches and the new station.

Through the single arch, the road ahead leads to the hamlet of Godley Hill on one side and the Kerry Foods factory on the other.

Go to Hyde DP Xtra for a view of a train crossing the top of the arch.

Gower Hey Gardens

This is the view from the top of the steps at the entrance to Gower Hey Woods from the Trans Pennine Trail.

Normally you cannot see across to Gower Hey Gardens and the wall by the path from Osborne Road but the trees have yet to start filling up with leaves and the undergrowth is bare too.

Spring is definitely late this year.

The view in the opposite direction can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Shadow Shot Sunday:
Clarendon Mall Entrance

This is the third of three "puddle" shots taken last Saturday week with my camera phone.

The first was L is for Legs.

The second was Fag ends in the Sky.

This was taken when I turned round after taking the first and looked at the sun shining straight down into a spread out puddle outside the entrance to Clarendon Mall. I moved slightly to the side so that the sun was mostly hidden behind one of the beams. When it was no longer flooding out the shot, I pressed the shutter.

As a result we end up with dark shadows of the beams as well as reflections.

For more shadow shots visit Hey Harriet.

Primulas and Palm Trees

This bed of primulas and palm trees is under the end of the multi-storey car park on Clarendon Street.

I hadn't noticed the palm trees here before but you can see them if you enlarge the photograph I posted in February 2007 so unlike the flowers they are not new.

A wider view can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Fourth Anniversary Post

Hyde DP is four year's old today.

We started in April 2006 with a photo of Hyde Market.

In our First Anniversary Post I described how the blog came about and showed a single daffodil in honour of Eric Tenin whose Paris Daily Photo started the CDPB phenomenum.

Our Second Anniversay Post highlighted some of the other blogs that were older than Hyde DP and still going.

We quite missed celebrating our Third Anniversary, probably because we were without telecommunications at the time, although due to the ability to pre-schedule posts and co-opt our friend Rune of Visual Norway to oversee the blog in our absence, postings continued unabated.

Today's post is another Tenin-esque shot similiar to the one we posted to celebrate the Fifth Anniversary of Paris DP.

This one is taken from the bench near the entrance to Clarendon Mall; the same one from which The Glowing Lights of Hyde was shot.

Here, however we are looking in the opposite direction up Clarendon Place past the Queens.

L is for Legs

My intention was to photograph the reflection of the Jolly Carter in the puddle outside the Clarendon Mall, but my phone-camera is a bit slow on the uptake so instead it captured all these passing legs.

Site of Windy Harbour

Site of the restaurant at Windy Harbour.

Windy Harbour has had mixed fortunes over the years. Once it was a popular restaurant but at various times the buildings here have lain vacant. Despite plans for a new restaurant and hotel, the buildings were badly damaged by arsonists and demolished in 2000. Since then no plans to restore the facility have come to fruition. The carpark has been fenced off.

The only photographs I have of the old restaurant are from a distance but you can see them on Old Hyde.

Tranquility Garden

The Garden of Tranquility lies in Hyde Park. It is a memorial for those patients who suffered at the hands of Harold Shipman.

The garden includes a granite trickle fountain, designed by Mel Chantry and is surrounded by herbs reclaimed from the old Newton Lodge which once sat on the site.

I last showed you this in March 2007. It seems Spring arrived earlier that year.

Tree at Pole Bank Hall

As a follow up to my recent post showing the renovation of Pole Bank Pond here is one of the large trees in the grounds.

A close-up of its shadow can be found on Shadow Shot Sunday.

A vintage shot can be found on Old Hyde.

Safe Weight Limit 1 Ton

This workshop on William Street used to be part of a car repair/service business which has since closed.

It has a hoist which I presume was mainly used for lifting the engines out of cars.

You can see a closer view of the hoist and its reflection on sithenah.

Pole Bank Pond Renovation

I first showed you Pole Bank Pond in 2008.

It doesn't look as lovely now as it did then having been dredged of accumulated mud as part of a renovation effort.

Once the home of prominent mill-owners, the Ashton family, Pole Bank Hall is now a private nursing home. The grounds, however are a public open space.

A vintage view of Pole Bank Hall can be found on Old Hyde.

On my personal blog, this week's Friday Bench is one that overlooks the pond.
