Old House on Church Street

Now three separate residences, this old house on Church Street was originally a large family home and a doctor's surgery.

It looks slightly lop-sided as the left hand portion of the property was destroyed by a bomb in WWII and subsequently demolished.

The space was occupied by a garage at one time but now a modern house has been erected there.

In the 1980s and 90s it was home to the Church Street dental practice but that has since relocated to Borough Arcade.

I took this photograph after being contacted by Yvonne Michelle whose great grandparents and great-great grandparents once owned the house. She sent me a photograph of the house as it was in about 1910. You can see that and read more details about its history on Old Hyde.

A house with a story - a pity they couldn't rebuild the neighbour in line with the old one.

I looked at the older picture too. It's fun to see what places used to look like!

Wow, they really did a good surgical job on the house. The new photo made it look like that's the original structure.

Sad that the trees and lights on fences are gone. These old places would have so much more character if people cared and took care of them as much as they did back before the war.

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I'm excited to explore your blog more, as I am a huge fan of England...yes, I guess I'm one of those annoying Americans who thinks everything British is cool. I spent 3 months studying in London several years ago and it was the best experience of my life. I just love the culture, the history, and the people.

Anyway, thanks again, and I hope to be back!

Researching Macqueen family history

BMA records list Dr.Joseph Gordon Macqueen as being in practice with Dr.Paterson in 1925 at 34, Church Street, Hyde. The youngest son Ian Gordon Macqueen was born at this address on June 16 1922, sadly the boy died suddenly at his parents' home in Rhyl, 1959.
I am curious to know if the "Old House on Church Street" was no 34 and the place where the family lived and from where Dr.Macqueen was in general practice. Perhaps someone out there knows the answer to this question.

my uncle Stanley Cross was the dentist who lived and practiced from this address. He was away on duty with the navy when the house was bombed. The bomb went through the roof and damaged several rooms..destroyed next door. His wife and young son were at home and survived. My mother..his wife's sister stayed in the house with them for months while the roof was covered with a tarpaulin. The family moved to Gee Cross on his return from service..the house remained as a dental surgery..and I remember going there often in the 1950's and 1960's. Stanley retired in the late 1960's but the dental practice continued there for many years. My mother went there until the practice moved. She was most amused once to be told by the dentist there then that the place had been bombed in the war.."yes I know...I was here".she said!
