Stone edifice

Set back from the corner of Dowson Road and Stockport Road, Gee Cross is this stone edifice. There are some semi-circular wooden seats at either side. As one can tell from this old picture it has always been a spot for folk to sit and talk, although then it was just round the corner.

The stone doesn't seem to have any inscription, and so far as I can find out, it isn't a memorial of any kind. Very clear in the background of the old picture but now obscured by trees is the steeple of Hyde Chapel.

Maybe the rock was too big to move, so they made it the centerpiece of a little sitting area:) I call that smart.

Looks like a nice stopping place. I like the autumn colors, and that big rock there...

I remember this stone being placed there Gerald, I don't think it was meant to be anything only something to look at. Hyde as a few of these dotted about. I think there's one on Dukinfield Road made out of an old gate post.

Personally I think it's a bit odd. Does the 210 bus still turn round there?

There hasn't been a 210 bus for several years. There is a 206 that runs Gee Cross to Manchester but it only an early morning and late afternoon commuter service. The bus that turns round there now is the 346 that runs into Hyde and then goes on to Ashton via Newton [all the way around Newton!]

Feels like a place where people can go and have a good think about life.

You're supposed to sit on the bench and envision the sculpture, be the sculpture, or maybe just take a nap.

It is interesting! In Providence we just let the art school kids plunk down bits of metal all over town.

I think it may have been placed there to mark the year 2000 !! it was just a piece of flat grassed ground before that.
