Town Hall Buildings, Market Street

Remember me showing you the Chimney Pots on Market Street?

Tom asked me which building they were on; the answer is the block known as Town Hall Buildings.

At one time the owners of the shops probably lived above in the middle storey with its bay windows and used the top floor as storage.

Today the businesses include Subway, the Yorkshire Bank, Chicken Hut, a pound shop, a charity shop, a camera shop and Toymasters.

These buildings are very smart - but these days there's usually a Tanning Studio as well.

Be interesting to do a study on how these shops change over a period of years

Beautiful windows and it's cool that you can find several shops around!

I've always liked this row of Shops Gerald, I knew they were the 'old' town hall buildings... yet I have never read anything about them or there history. Some of the upper floors are now rented out as flats/apartments... and there entrance is round the back.

Do you know that at one time there was an ambulance station in Hyde? it was back to back with these buildings. Harrisson Office Surplies is there now. I remember the ambulances well... they were cream with blue/dark purple wings on the front. I also recall one with sliding doors. I think it housed 3 ambulances and the crews. I would be interested if you find any info out about that place.

Used to be the ""Yorkshire Penny Bank". Remember it as such?

Shouldn't there be a nail bar there too, and a Greggs?

Did you pop into the charity shop and see if there were any bargains? I always head for charity shops whenever I visit a new town.

Do people live on the middle floors now? I'm thinking they may now be business offices for lawyers and such.

Oh, I just read Tom's comment so I guess I have the answer.

You must have a good memory Tom, I can't remember the ambulance station at all.
