Side by Side Bridges

For our contribution on the first Monday of the month to Broer som Binder [Bridges between], we are back by the river Etherow at Broadbottom.

The old stone bridge was built in 1683.

The metal bridge alongside for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders is about 300 years younger.

It was from the footbridge that I took my photograph of the border post, actually a support in the middle of the river holding up the railway viaduct.

More details of and links to other participants to Broer som Binder can be found on Visual Norway.

Two bridges side-by side, but three hundred years apart. That gives some food for thought.

PS Thank you for the comment - finally back from an autumn holiday.

This is very interesting. Most places provided for a place for pedestrians MUCH, MUCH later. These nice folks did way back then.

Hi Gerald re your query about the Severn. My photo was taken in Worcester, which isn't a million miles from Shrewsbury. As Babooshka said, the river runs quite a distance from around Birmingham to the Welsh border.

Beautiful view from your double bridges! Our city wants to build a new bridge and it might be separate for pedestrians.

Drop by and see what bridge I wrote about.
