Sluicegates
This photograph shows the sluicegate on the canal outside Automasters. It is taken from the opposite direction to my post last week of canalside graffiti.
As I wrote in an earlier post on graffiti, much that I see around Hyde is puerile, if not offensive, and hardly worth preserving nor recording.
This is perhaps one of the more artistic examples.
Art or vandalism? Make your own mind up by visiting these 148 blogs who have all pledged to post graffiti or street art as part of this month's CDPB theme.

I think whoever did that bit of graffiti is a long way to call themselves artists!
Not very pretty.
Definitely not on the "art" end of the spectrum, that one!
It's not very artistic or colorful graffiti.
I guess art and beauty is all in the eye of the perceiver, eh? Happy Theme Day!
These so called artists should be using their "talent" in a more constructive ways instead of defacing other people's properties. I used to clean graffiti off of walls and light posts in my neighborhood. It was a neverending job.
I like the sunnny background and the canal.
I agree that the graffiti artist is art challenged :-)
You've made your points very well, Gerald. Graffiti is a big problem in the Portland area.
Thanks for your visits and comments at my blog.
Hi
I've done a Chippenham Graffiti art update today with a link to CDPB and to you at Hyde daily photo. Thanks for telling me about this :)
I agree with your opinion. :)
I can't really tell what this graffiti is saying but I do like that you show exactly where it is - like the sluice gates and the way the sun hits the land in the background.
I agree with Jilly and I enjoy seeing things as they are instead just showing us the pretty bits.
When I was a vandal with a can of spray paint I thought it was art; now that I'm older and well educated I know it is vandalism. Most of the time. I joke, of course.
I like the sluice gates!
Definitely not art!
Nice spot, though...
That's a great photo quite apart from the graffiti, Gerald.
I like your comment on your photo. I think this is true of most graffiti.
This is not very pretty!
of the first glance I thought that the graffiti understood "HDP"
;D
I think it is "artistic vandalism".
I find that to be more on the vandalism side. We have a lot of that here, too, and I find it so aggravating.
I think is definitely worth recording as with time the different pieces that will inevitably appear on this wall will tell a story!
Cheers!
This one doesn't work for me. Unfortunately I saw a fair amount of this type graffiti when in the UK a couple years ago. Made my work as a photographer more difficult, too.
Recently in the TV news, we had this one talented graffiti artist painted a tribute for Sir. Ed. Hillary.
Many people recognised that is a art opposed to the graffiti. I guess the boundary is not really black and white but really wide band of gray area.
Art or vandalism, is a good question, here in Mexico City is a way of expression of the called Street boys (Niños de la calle) and of course only a few are talented, but we can see a very good works, made it in a hour or so. Cheers from MC.
I think the grafitti is improved by its surroundings - it's not much to look at by itself!
Thanks for your comment at Glasgow DP
I agree with your sentiments about graffiti; hence the reason I looked for a more meaningful mural.
Nottingham City Council have a team of graffitti & chewing gum busters. It's one war they are not winning.
I like that your photo shows the graffiti in situ - and you're right, there's nothing here to be excited about.
Were the other graffiti at least colourful? It may have been interesting to see them.

First of all I would like to thank you about your words on CDPB registering issue. Then I like this photo and your caption about "puerile" graffiti in Hyde. I ever loved your country and its so pretty towns for these reasons too.
Well Gerald, that's a nice fat tag you've caught there near the sluice gate. It is prettier than a skinny single line tag might be. It's certainly graffiti and not a street mural. I imagine it will be cleaned off or painted over fairly soon.
LOL on Denton's comment!
Hope you are enjoying a lovely weekend!

PS-thanks for your encouraging words! -K
Hmmm - practice might make perfect but that "artist" will be practicing for a long time ;-)
well, when they are starting, it's graffiti, when they get better, it looks like an art piece! haha
Happy Theme Day!
well, I welcome any form of beautification. and what a great shot showing the area.
Would have to stretch it a little to call it art. They've also the fat letters which are not easily recognisable, so who knows what they are trying to say!
The author of this one has to improve before being an artist...
A simple graffiti
It is startling to see how widespread this sometimes artistic vanalism is.
Hi: that is vandalism. The sluice gate was so fascinating I almost missed that this was your theme day post. Here is my CDP: Street Art entry (too late for the list). Thank you.
True graffiti for me. Nice shot!
I have to say I'm with you on this one! The sluice gate is definitely more interesting! :)
Yep, I have to agree that it's more vandalism than art ... like you noticed on my post where the mural was vandalized.
