#500 Hyde Town Hall

This is the five hundredth post on Hyde DP.

I nearly gave you two photographs for the price of one, as I was going to post a picture of Hyde Town Hall 1907 which appeared on Old Wom Tigley's Wiggers World blog [dead link removed] together with a poem by Joshua Bradley about the opening of Hyde Town Hall Clock and Bells, October 18th 1884.

100 years ago you could see the building clearly in all its glory. Now with trees, traffic and street furniture, such a view is impossible.

I recently acquired a number of old prints and photographs of Hyde. I also know of such material elsewhere. I have therefore created a companion blog, Old Hyde where I shall be publishing non-contemporary items.

What a milestone! Congratulations, Gerald! I know it is not easy staying consistent...

Comparing the photos of the Town Hall - I wonder when the bricks were painted that "bloody" red ;-)

My congrats with 500 post!!
Is this a church tower ?

Thanks for your comments on my blog today I posted somethng about my summer in Spain, the costa Brava again....

See you bye, JoAnn :)

joann -- no it isn't a church tower -- it is the Town Hall the seat of municipal adminstration.

isabella - ah yes, red is the natural colour of the brick - the old photo is monochrome sepia and in the 1900s the building was probably quite dirty due to the grime and smoke that emanated from mill chimneys in those days. The few chimneys that survive no longer belch out black smoke and the air is a lot cleaner and so are the buildings.
