T is for Treacle Brow

The first photograph on here of Treacle Brow was almost two years ago in July 2006 when the Werneth Arms was still decorated with flags for the World Cup.

That photograph emphasised the hand-rail down the middle more than the cobbles, showed only a glimpse of what was then waste-land between Stockport Road and King Edward Avenue and nothing of the land beyond.

In October 2006 I posted a picture looking up the brow, which was voted the runner-up in the Best of Hyde Daily Photo 2006

My other ABC-Wednesday T posts this week are ~~ Throstle Bank at Old Hyde ~~ Teithside Tree at Ackworth born, gone West ~~ Turnstone at Sithenah

Gerald, I remember this steep way and love the cobbles. Can you fill us in on the colorful name, how it came to be called that, perhaps what it means? Thanks,

brow means hill but why treacle I have no idea, but some of my readers have local and historical knowledge and may be able to help.

Oh, I thought maybe brow meant top of a hill. Neat perspective, Gerald.

I didn't realise how wide it was until I clicked on the photo and noticed the lorry at the bottom.
Good shot...

"Louis" likes the texture the stones add to the photo. Very nice!

At SF Bay Daily Photo, "Louis" continued the theme of his "S" post with the "T" post. HERE is how he did it.

Reminds me bit of the kind of steep streets we have in the old part of town in Bergen, Norway. In the middle they used to lay the cobble stones in another pattern to ease the ascent for the horses.

I like such local history.

An interesting name...how did it come by that strange name?

this road is very similar to some parts of Budapest:) Amazing to see!

This is a beautiful shot! I wish we had more cobbles here.

cobblestones seem incongruous with modern handrails for the less mobile. they are so old-fashioned these days that i wonder what young people think of them - maybe they put it in their heads that the council is scrimping on modernisation.

Dennis likes treacle--maybe there was a treacle cake baker or treacle maker down there long ago. They should have a treacle festival.
