St Michael's and All Angels church at Mottram in Longdendale dominates the skyline in many directions. This particular view was taken from Ashworth Lane.
The first church here was probably in the 13th century. As the Parish website informs us
The present church dates from the end of 15th century. The building of the tower was supported by a bequest from Sir Edmund Shaa, a native of the area who rose to fame and fortune in London and died in 1488. It is possible that the whole of the outside walls were rebuilt at the same time, perhaps as an enlargement of the existing building. In 1855 the church underwent a major restoration under the direction of local architect E.H. Shellard, during which the height of the nave roof was raised, allowing for much more imposing clerestory windows. My other ABC-Wednesday S posts this week are ~~ Sundial Cottage at Old Hyde ~~ Scream at Ackworth born, gone West ~~ South Pier at Sunset at Sithenah

Wonderful photo.
What a beautiful old church, and good s of course. My nosey question today is, would this church be locked of an evening now?
This is a beautiful old church, and the post was very interesting!
old english churches always look to me as if they resemble castles. the architecture of a greek church is really quite different. our local church is dedicated to the holy spirit.
oops, forgot to say, my S was a street sweeper
"Louis" really appreciates these old churches. The U.S. is "too young" to have these magnificent edifices.
A very beautiful church:)
