more about Queen Adelaide

When I posted a picture of the Queen Adelaide in December, several people wanted to know more about it, especially the name, so here on the side is the inn sign and a board with information about William IV's consort who gave her name to the capital of South Australia.

Click on the picture to enlarge it and read the text.

She sounds like a real good sheila - and obviously worthy of the city she was named after.!!

That's facsinating Ham. It is not a criticism at all, but the sign should read, "South Australia's Capital".
Australia's capital is, of course, Canberra.
Anyhow, it's a wonderful post and I am enjoying all this research immensly.

Those wanting to know a bit more can go to,

Here is a bit of a precis.

Thank you Ham.

William IV of the United Kingdom, (Duke of Clarence and St Andrews and Earl of Munster) married Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, a woman half his age at Kew on 13 July 1818.

Previously the King with an Irish actress, Dorothea Bland, better known by her stage name, Mrs. Jordan (the title "Mrs" was assumed at the start of her stage career to explain an inconvenient pregnancy), had ten illegitimate children, five sons and five daughters, who were given the surname "FitzClarence.".........

Another of my old haunts Gereld, I've propped up that bar many a day and night. The first Land-Lord I remember was I think called King, a very small but rotund Irish man, I still se his son in Hyde now and then. My friend from Old Simon Boot and his wife Alison owned it for a while, alond with the Werneth, and the Railway in Newton. They now have the Lamb Inn. Gee Cross is very busy at night times now, which I suppose for a small area is a bonus to the pubs and a pain in the neck for those who live near them.

Have you been to check out the New Village Chip Shop yet?
Grat Blog this, very close to my heart most of the places mentioned. Thanks

Is that a new sign, I don't seem to have noticed it before?
