This inn-sign for the Shepherds Call has obviously seen better days.
In better shape is the old stone street name sign. Very few of these are left. Most have been replaced by more modern metal ones.
Across the main road a similar sign for Nelson Street survives.
An aside: In the early hours of this morning the time was
01:02:03 04/05/06
though I guess for Americans this magic moment won't occur till next month!

Gerald, I love the pieces of real England you share with us.
This is a lovely photo. One of the great things about England is that streets tend to have fixed names like Tower Street. It will ALWAYS be Tower Street.
Unfortunately in Vienna street names have a habit of changing to suit the mood:
e.g. Frieden Platz (Peace Square) becomes Mexico Platz
becomes Frieden Platz (again) becomes Hermann Göring Platz
becomes Roozevelt Platz
becomes ............. (fill in this space).
