In February 2007 who would have envisaged that Woolworths would no longer dominate British High Streets?
However, in the run-up to Christmas 2008 they were offering large discounts.
Come New Year 2009 they had closed and the shop looked forlorn.
By April 2009 there were still no takers for the vacant premises.
As we've previously remarked on Old Hyde, before it was Woolworths it was Brownson's Clothiers and now it seems £-pound stretcher are moving in.
You can view the coloured version of this photograph on Geograph.

Poundstretchers seem to have had a checkered history too. We had one here, it closed a year or two ago, now a new one has opened up. The quality of the goods on offer is mixed, mix of a pound shop & Wilkos.
It's a shame Hyde as lost what decent shops it as had... The best shop in Hyde at the moment is Hibbetts Butchers near the Queens Hotel.... a family run business that started life in a shop across from Hyde Chaple in Gee Cross... and as moved more than once through rent rises in the town centre... Most family run shop that offer great service have folded now. As for Poundstretcher I can not see that lasting long.
I've never heard of Poundstretcher, but we used to have Woolworth's here when I was growing up.
I think this will be short-lived. When I was old enough to apply for a Saturday job it was Woolworths in Hyde. I hated the green nylon "overall" that I had to wear, it was about ten sizes too big back then! Happy days.
sad to see ...
What exactly is £ stretcher? An economy retailer? Hope you make good deals...
God bless you!

nice history. Didn't know bout Geograph. Cool!
Ours in Chippenham's still empty :(
Our Woolworths is going to be the new home of clothes shop New Look. Don't know who'll fill the shop they leave behind though.
It isn't actually a new opening it is a relocation of Poundstretcher from their current location on Manchester Rd. (currently branded as Instore on the site of the old Peart Works), to a more prime location. No new jobs but it at least fills an empty gap in the town centre.
