ABC Wednesday: John Street
John Street, like many others in Hyde, had its middle demolished and destroyed in the 1970s with the building of the M67 motorway.
Here is the Southern section leading into the Market Place. On the right is the Postal Sorting Office
Here is the Northern end of John Street.
Left is the Clark Way bypass and right is the sliproad on to the motorway.

All in the name of progress??
I remember the work being carried out and the mess Hyde was in... building work and wagons all over the place. I also rember the amount of traffic in Hyde town centre... the road outside of the White Lion was terrible to cross.. at least all that as gone now.
Progress always seems to come with a big bill in many ways!
Have a great day!
Sylvia
Motorways seem to be so important that perfectly good buildings will be demolished. We had a beautiful little park, where we all liked to walk but that now has to be destroyed to give way to a ...parkingplace!!!
Thanks for your visit to my puzzle world! 2000 pieces! Yes I am sure that'll take a long time! My husband and I used to do that and we were almost sorry when it was ready!
Hmmm. I wonder if highway speed is really improving the quality of our lives.
I HATE this picture; not the photo itself, but the inanity that "progress" is supposed to represent. Is there at least an overpass (or underpass) or is one side of the town cut off to pedestrians from the other?
O Roger there are two road bridges and three footbridges crossing the motorway - they've been featured quite often in previous posts.
That must have created a lot of problems during construction;and quite a few afterward as well.
mumbai is going through the throes of 'urban development' now.
New streets are very important but I hope people there do not be irritated by all noise and mess around during the construction time!
Léia :)
Construction and destruction seem to go hand-in-hand too often, don't they!

No it ain't.
Ian...
I enjoy your posts so very much. It is always sad to me when new "roads" distrupt a quiet neighborhood. I have no answer but do wish for more sidewalks in my city!

Something always seems to be destroyed in the name of "progress." The street looks rather bare now, doesn't it? Thanks for sharing this J!
Interesting post! Obviously, John Street appears to be a very common name for a street. In Hyde you have two of them, one north and one south of the highway. (;
