Neighbours Week: 4. Stalybridge

This week we are visiting our five nearest neighbours.

North-East is Stalybridge and this is all that is left of Stalybridge Town Hall.

Like Hyde, Stalybridge is part of Cheshire, has a Stockport postcode, and is now part of Tameside Metropolitan Borough.

Here, from behind the Town Hall Portico, is a view of Market Street.

Ah, yes - I had a photo a while ago of the old Town Hall from a different angle
here.

A clear view along Market Street from the Town Hall can be seen here.

I like how they paved the area within the walls. Now all it needs are a few benches and potted plants :)

I have really enjoyed "Neighbours Week". I lived for a few years in Stalybridge. Many thanks Gerald for the great photo's.

It all looks rather sad - I would imagine it is a focal point for the local youths ..

Another coincidence - I was there yesterday. And Stuart Maconie mentioned it on his radio programme last night.

The town hall portico is a lovely structure. I agree with Hilda that benche and few plants would be perfect here.

Shame the rest of the building has disappeared. Was it knocked down for some reason?

If you click and look at the bigger picture you will see that there ARE indeed some benches at the back - I think I was sitting on one when I took the second photo (it was last September)
The first link in Martin's comment will provide further information.

That looks quite sad like that. Would have been better to knock it all down or keep the whole building.

So is there a history connected with that lonely facade?

I like how you included the front and then the back. A whole different perspective. Kind of like people. Here is the part that we present to the world and here is the part that we don't let anyone see. And it ain't pretty! LOL!
