Recently I showed you the view looking down
Knott Lane from just below its junction with Dowson Road.
Halfway down from there we come to the Apethorn.

For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the British way of life - this is what is known as a
Public House which is a place for the consumption of alcohol. It is not an hotel nor a restaurant, although many pubs are also hotels or restaurants.

I was born just around the corner from this pub Gerald on Cheetham Fold.. I remember this pub being built. At one time it had an Off Licence shop on the right hand side which did well. Before that it was a rough ground and a bit of a tip. Knott Fold farm further down should be of interest for your Old Hyde blog...
Again it is not only your post but Tom's comments too that out areas in context. I like the explanation of a Public House being not quite what they seem.
