Swains Valley Allotments
Got no garden? Want to do some hard work? Get yourself an allotment.
Actually though, you might not be able to, as according to the Tameside MBC website, currently there are no vacant plots available here nor elsewhere in the area.

I'm a little lost. What's an allotment?
Hi Hilda
What is an Allotment?
In the UK, allotments are small parcels of land rented to individuals usually for the purpose of growing food crops. There is no set standard size but the most common plot is 10 rods, an ancient measurement equivalent to 302 square yards or 253 square metres.

Same problem in Switzerland... I hated the concept when we first got here but now am firmly converted. When we went to apply... nothing available... this one in your post looks like hard work ::))
Hi Gerald
Where's this? don't think I've heard of this area before... I was looking for a 'lottery winner' jumping around in glee but alas non here ..
They are almost impossible to get here too! They are inherited and rarely sold or even rented. I'm sure that it's they same in jolly old Angleterre:)
I agree with Leia even i can see a pool there...And garden you can plant ...Unseen Rajasthan
I can understand that , cause there are more folk now wanting to grow their own veg - due to the price of stuff these days and home grown tastes a lot better.
Yes, It's true.
They are all the rage and very hard to get. Some municipalities kick you out if they feel that you are under utilizing your plot.
Here in Hollywood, California we have allotments. Not far from here actually!
here's a link to Hollywood allotments

Sounds like inside jobs. Somebody must have them. LOL
The size you mentioned seems like it is large enough to raise a fair amount of food on. It also is hard work from the start to the end when it is time to harvest.
Nice post, Gerald.
Hilda, I just spoke with Roda and she too doesn't know allotment, so I explained what do you call it when your grandfather goes to a plot of land to grow beans.
She said that's a garden.
So, allotment is a garden, or as we here in hollywood call them, Community Vegetable Garden.
Dear Gerald and Ashtonian, thank you so much for the explanation. I think we have a version of it, but it'll take too long to explain the difference. But at least I understand the concept now. Thanks again.
