Established 1830

Back in July 2006 when I posted a photograph of this off-licence on Market Street you could see that it was originally the offices of the Mutual Life Philanthropic Assurance Collecting Society.

Alas, the stone facade has been removed. All that is left is a piece at the side reading "Est. 1830". A few days after I took this photograph, scaffolding was in place and it seems some work has been done to the roof. I don't think the old facade will be replaced.

The business of the "Hyde Philanthropic" was taken over many years ago by the "Manchester Oddfellows".

Pity - the new signs don't quite have the charm of the old.

That's sad when old things are demolished. Why can't they restore the facade ? It was exactly the same in Brussels, so many old buildings were replaced by new once. Now they try to save what is still saveable !

Never heard of the society, it's like one of those names from Monty Python, like the Uri Geller School of Spoonbending!

What a gorgeous building and what a shame that it has been defaced by beer adverts.

It really sickens me to walk up Hyde Lane and see how many old buildings have been defaced in this way.. I am surprised there was no listing on thisbuilding... even if it was just a local one.

There was a Oddfellows Arms on Ridling lane at one time Gerald.. Ricky Hatton's (Boxer) mum and Dad run it at one time. The building is still there.
