Winter Woolies

2009 should have been the year when Woolworths celebrated its centenary.

Two years ago it looked like this.

Last month it looked like this.

This is how it looked yesterday with the shutters brought down for the final time.

Your entries and photos are ALWAYS so interesting. Out Woolworths in Canada transformed into Woolco many years ago and then Woolco morphed into Walmart about 14 years ago. As children in Corner Brook, Newfoundland we used to love to go to a movie matinee and then to the lunch counter at Woolworths for a Coke. Ah yes, the good old days....

This Woolworths, in good times and bad, looks so different from the one I knew growing up in Baltimore, Maryland. I loved the store when I was a child. Your photo captures the melancholy I feel at its demise. Thanks for your welcome to CDPB, Gerald England.

I have many fond memories of trips to Woolworths as a child. Sad to see them leave, as has so many other retailers.

Woolworths gone = higher prices somewhere down the road

Really sad. I saw the news about all stores closing. the Hyde one still looked like a well stocked, good store in the 2 yrs ago photo. I remember a Woolworths in the LA neighborhood of Highland Park where I moved to in 1970 & lived thru 1980. I was there last summer & a few businesses still survived Owl's Drugs, Highland Park Theatre (movie) & The Coldest Beer in Town liquor store.

what a sad sight - but it couldnt last another year to see it's centenary - after all, its prices always ended with 0.99cents...

How sad! I wonder what the store will be turned into now - perhaps an everything under a £1 shop - it was the only one that was packed in Poole the other day.

It has been a few yrs since i have seen a Woolworth's most of them have closed up many yrs ago around this part of the country.
Sad isn't it that the Old and true have to suffer. I don't know about other places, but these times are effecting so many people and businesses. We have had about 15 restaurants close up here not to mention a lot of other businesses. Being in the motel business and a small mom & pop, we certainly have felt the crunch, but do notice that the larger more expensive motels are still doing well. guess those are the rich folks.

You always have such a mind for history, Gerald. It's one of the things that makes your blog so interesting. If there's one thing guaranteed in life, it's change. I too remember Woolworth's in my hometown of DeKalb, Illinois, and the one in Chicago on Michigan Avenue.

Happy new year to you, Gerald.

I was amazed to see a Woolworths still alive in this decade at all...ours are long gone. And I miss them! At least you have pictures to prove they are not a figment of our imagination.

I wonder what is in the future for this beautiful building now?

Ours is just the same now. It's such a big store too. don't know that many shops would be willing to take on the lease.

York Woolies closed down a while ago, and there is now a new big Boots the chemists there. Bury St Edmunds Woolies has also just closed, I am told, and I have a feeling that's going to be a hard one to get someone to take over.

It's sad. But the building is still interesting.

So sad! I loved Woolworth's when I was little. My grandfather used to take me to a huge Woolworth's in downtown Atlanta when I visited him in the summers. Your picture brings back the memories!

I didn't realize that there were any Woolworth's still open anywhere. I worked at Woolworth's in the Levittown Shopping Center here in Levittown, Pennsylvania back in the 80's - I worked at the lunch counter. I hated that job! The manager was evil! But I always loved shopping at Woolworth's!
