L S Lowry

It was recently brought to my attention that Mottram-in-Longdendale, Hollingworth and indeed Broadbottom all have an SK14 postcode and that I should try and include more photographs from these areas.

L.S. Lowry, lived in Mottram from 1948 until his death in 1976. This bronze statue of Lowry seated on a bench is located next to the junction of Hyde Road and Stalybridge Road.

There is a close-up picture of the statue on my photoblog Sithenah.

A commemorative plaque can also be found on Lowry's former home, "The Elms" on Stalybridge Road.

Local duo Brian & Michael created a new audience for Lowry when they recorded their One Hit Wonder Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs. You can hear them talking about it today on Old Hyde.

The whole of hollingworth and mottram come under Hyde's sk14 postcode, am i right then Gerald, in thinking, that makes Hyde the largest town(area wise) in Tameside

Don't know. Tameside MBC recognise "Longdendale" as a specific area, but traditionally Longdendale includes Tintwistle, Hadfield and Padfield which with Glossop form the High Peak are of Derbyshire.

Very lovely photos. I always love to photograph these statues and sculptures too and also learn more information about them.

I love this statue. It is nice to have it just seated on a bench and not all formal on a plinth like most statues.

Didn't know Brian and Michael were locals or indeed was Lowry at one time. Our bench statue is Norman Wisdom. Lowry looks very happy in his corner of the world there.

My sisters postcode is SK14 in Hollingworth - and the address is
'Via Hyde'. I've always wondered about that.

Wow, I hadn't realised that Lowry had died at such a young age. Look how educational the daily photo blogs are!
