Diversion

The monthly DP theme for September is "street signs or street lighting".

It is a subject that is covered quite frequently here and my first thought was to do a collage of signs and lights that have appeared here previously. I'm sure a number of participents will have the same idea. However, I wasn't very pleased with my attempts at creating a collage.

My attention was diverted recently by activity in our street, the bottom of which has been made one-way. Shortly after I'd taken this picture, the workmen went on to paint the words "NO ENTRY" in white letters across the road. I've seen at least a couple of vehicles carry blithely on down the hill, nonetheless!

Below are links to sites that have registered to say they'll be posting on this month's theme. Unlike previous months, I'm not intending to update the list with permalinks to the actual theme posts.

You Brits have such a way with words! I much prefer your "Diversion" to our "Detour";-)

I was going to say the same thing as Isabella...maybe they were visitors from another place and didn't realize diversion means the same thing as a detour...or maybe they thought it meant everyone but them.

This what perambulations of Barkfoot says on his blog about no entry signs
http://theperambulationsofbarkfoot.blogspot.com/

PUBLIC... I'm so glad I'm not a 'member of the public'. They aren't allowed to do anything. You always see signs saying 'No Entry to Members of the Public' or 'Members of the Public are not allowed to.....'. Of course, by not being a member of the public none of these signs apply to me, it makes life so much simpler!

Gerald, you mean September, right?

First time that a see a diversion sign... I should go to England more often (I mean at least once in my life time). :-(

Very diverting!

Hmmm wonder if you have the reality show the Amazing Race UK. hehe.. It would be using Diversion instead of Detour. :-)

You diverted from your usual habit of every month! There's no more link of pages that have posted up the Themes!

Happy Theme Day!

It sounds like you had a diversion from your efforts to make a collage ... We also often have problems with new signs being ignored ... A sign of a different kind was changed at work which cause all sorts of problems. This is a real story. At a client site that changed the men's and ladies restrooms (to give the ladies more room I understand). The force of habit is very hard to break and many a person entered the wrong place.

Nice photo of the diversion sign. Atleast it's visible. Wer sometimes go ahead to find out there's a dead end and we didn't notice the diversion sign.
Nice photo.

"Diversion" in Mexico means "FUNNY".

The life is a paradox.

I agree with Isabella. When I read the word, diversion, I immediately thought of something to jolt the train of thoughts.

lavenderlady - maybe they were regulars who were so used to going straight they didn't see it until too late and thought - hey there's nothing coming up so I'll save 30 seconds and carry on.

outhouse - yes I saw that one the other day too

antigua oops thank for spotting the error which I'll correct forthwith - twas a busy day yesterday!

keropok - don't know the show - yes I'm too busy today to spend all day adding permalinks - maybe SOMEONE will.

poly it can be used in that context here too

I agree with Isabella...Brit words are always unique:)

Happy Theme Day to you!

The idea of maintaining a list of permalinks is great but obviously it can't be the responsibility of one person to do the work each time. We'd have to find a better way.

Makes me want to drop what I'm doing to go check out the diversion!

Per makes a good point. Perhaps we could have a way to register our own permalinks at the CDP portal, much in the same way we register our sites for the theme day, and the list could be updated by all participants the day after the show.

Ok yes ,You got it! because now you are the thirth blog I visit today with the theme 'signs-streetlights', I am gonna do it tommorow too, where can I 'sign-in' haha"

Nice photo ....in combination with your expanation.

Yes why not make a collage? That sounds like a great idea!

have a good weekend:) JoAnn

What civilized people you are. On my road, they'd just plop down machinery in the middle of the way and barricade the whole thing off, access to houses bedamned. And probably ticket and tow every car parked within a half-mile radius. lol! :)

Very funny. I like the photo too with those lovely shadows.

That's scary, hopefully people won't have to end up in a car crash to learn about the new direction!

Good one :)

I wouldn't understand "diversion" either! We say "detour."

stromso & z permalinks can only be created after the post [although they can be known in advance if using wordpress I believe [had some discussion about this with Nebel of Trier about a year ago I think] - only a handful of sites surpess permalinks.

joann as your blog isn't based on a specific town/cities you aren't officially a CDPB so can't sign up to do the theme -- having said that, there is no reason why you can't join in with theme either on the day or subsequently. -- several non-CDPB blogs usually participate unofficially and if I'm doing permalinks I try to pick most of them up and list them along with the others - but not this month.

bundawah too busy is the main reason I'm not doing permalinks this month -- I'm not upset personally by those who register and don't post -- some have good excuses -- the theme itself doesn't "especially excite" me, but as always the ones I've seen so far offer the usual diverting variety!

rambling round they say the US & UK are countries divided by a common language! British English is though a polyglot language with many words having several meanings -- we quite like confusing foreigneers [but only in the nicest possible way]

Ah ah that is very funny. In French diversion is "pejorative" (don't know whether that adjective applies). French people would think the man is trying to get their attention to prevent them from seeing something more important.... :-)

Diversion is funny to me for detour :)Happy theme day.

I echo Isabella's comment, Gerald, and I'm glad for your final choice for today. Your blog is a lovely diversion for my Saturday morning, for instance ;^). Kudos on a great take for our theme day,
-Kim
PS, last night when I posted for today, I forgot it would be the first of the month. Now I've got it together for theme day, but at least my first post did have a street light. . .oh my -K.

Ann (MobayDP) said...

As you said, force of habit probably caused them to break the "No entry sign".

I've driven right through a set of new traffic lights before. I wasn't used to them being there. Thankfully I didn't get a ticket that time :)

Meg said...

And what is the man in the white coat contemplating, I wonder.

Bergson said...

There is a deviation because of the prohibited street?

Eric said...

It's always funny to see the word "Diversion" on English roads because in French we have the same word (pronounced differently of course ;)) and it means something rather different, more like when to try to mislead someone by doing something on purpose.

Gerald (SK14) said...

marie and eric yes the word can mean that in English too in a different context - what we find "odd" is the fact that others find it "odd" when it seems so commonplace to us.

ann - ah confession time

meg I think his next job was painting the words NO ENTRY across the junction.

bergson - that is about right; previously there was two-way traffic up and down the road. Now the bottom is one-way up and traffic coming down is "diverted" along the street on the left to meet the main road at a T-junction just a few hundred metres away from where the would have met it previously. Road works are expected to last 12 weeks after which the no entry signs will be taken down and diversion removed.
