St Thomas the Apostle (3)

I've shown you the rear of St Thomas the Apostle Church from Tinker's Lane and the front on Lumn Road.

Here we have a close-up of the bell tower at the side on Leigh Street.

This reminds me of the tradition of "topping out" a new building with a freshly cut sapling

I,too, wonder about the foliage that seems to be sprouting from the chimney. Is this for real or an optical illusion?

I have never seen an open bell tower like that. Would love to know more about the architecture. Thanks for a unique shot

It does look strange but you'll find similar greenery on many old buildings where the gutters and such have never been cleaned out for years. Quite how it got there in the first place I don't know but would suspect a bird tried to build a nest up there one day and left sufficient soil for some seed to germinate and grow.
