More Rooftops

Another rooftop view from the top of the multi-storey car park.

In the centre is what will probably always be known as the Woolworth's dome.

Snowy Roofs

A view over snowy roofs towards the Hare & Hounds on Werneth Low.

The morning sun is somewhere behind the tree on the left.

This our 1500th post.

Today's photograph was taken from the top deck of a bus at the Market Place heritage bus stop with its fine finial.

Over the market stall roofs is the entrance to the Clarendon Mall, or "Clarendon Square Shopping Centre" as it calls itself.

Meanwhile shoppers by the HSBC Bank are busy buying their burgers at Sizzler's.

Hounds Behind The Snow

The snow kept falling in batches yesterday.

Just after lunch it was briefly sunny. I looked out and could see the Hare and Hounds up on the Low. As I pointed my camera out of the window and zoomed towards it, the snow started falling again.

I've had to enhance the photo a good bit to bring out the details but I've not reduced the colour at all.

Compare the view with the one I took of the first frost.

About an hour and a half later the snow had settled and I took a follow-up photograph which you can see on Hyde DP Xtra.

Christmas Starts Here

Christmas starts here, or rather Hyde's Christmas lights on Market Street start here with the one attached to the lamppost outside the Shepherds Call.

The next one down is on the corner of Church Street and can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

I took these a few weeks ago before the lights were switched on.

From today you can start voting for Hyde Daily Photo of the Year 2009. There are twelve contenders. Everyone has six votes to cast in the manner they choose. The winner will be announced in January. The photographs and voting form can be found at Best of Hyde 2009.

Starling's Feet

Whilst waiting for a bus at the heritage stop recently, I was distracted by the starlings clambering on the roof of the bus stop canopy.

A fuller view of the roof is on Hyde DP Xtra.

A Rook on the Roof

This rook on the roof of one of the market stalls is a frequent visitor I'm told.

I took several photographs of it when I saw it a couple of months ago. I published one of them on my blog Ackworth born, gone West and another on my photoblog Sithenah.

Hyde Chapel Roof

Last week I posted a closeup of the East Window of Hyde Chapel.

This week I am following that up with a close-up of the vaulted roof above it.

Market Stall Roofs

Regular viewers will be familiar with the bright coloured roofs of the stalls on Hyde Market.

Here is a close-up of the underside of a stall roof. As you can see, it is well insulated, illuminated and loved by the local pigeons.

One Way

These street lights seem to feature in a lot of my photographs. From comments received, their design seems to be well liked. I've always taken them a bit for granted myself.

The dome in the background is on the top of what is now Woolworths, but a century ago was Brownson's Clothiers.

Two Little Crows

As the sun melted the snow that fell on Easter Sunday, I watched these two crows frollicking on the chimney pots across the street.

Bank Roof

The roof of the HSBC (formerly Midland) Bank is very distinctive and very recognisable on old photographs.

Bus Station Roof

Two for the price of one today.

This picture, taken with my point-and-shoot Olympus, shows the projecting out roof of Hyde Bus Station. By shooting towards the sun, however, whilst it creates a satisfyingly austere image, all detail is lost.

This is the same image after "equalising the histogram". Although this creates a rather flat appearance it does bring out the details. In the background is the Donnybrook Medical Centre and the rear of the parade of shops at the bottom of Market Street.

Flowery Field Church and Factory Chimney

Another view from the footbridge over the M67, this time looking North-Westerly to Flowery Field Church and a factory chimney which while it looks like this one is actually another one.

Clarendon Place Bus Stop

Unlike bus stop EM3000, lots of buses stop here in Clarendon Place across the road from The Queens.

For buses coming in from Glossop, Hattersley and other points East it is the last stop before the Bus Station.

As you can see the roofer has finished pointing the ridge tiles above the pet shop.

Another Rainbow

I featured a rainbow here on January 4th 2007.

This one is from last week. It was taken from my bedroom window.

A different version of the same shot can be viewed on Autumn Haiku 2007.

Chimney pot at Dunkirk Farm

Take the road past Newton Hall and you'll end up at Dunkirk Farm.

The highly unusual chimney pot is in sharp contrast to the modern satellite TV dish.

Beams

These beams are inside Newton Hall which was open yesterday as part of the Heritage Open Days.

The 14th century cruck framed manor house was restored in 1970 by W Kenyon & Sons Ltd.
