Six Shops

Opposite Knott Fold is this row of six shops.

The one next to the hairdressers which is currently closed but looking for new tenants used to be a really excellent fish and chip shop. Years ago I remember being a regular customer, often giving them my order and then visiting Yogi's newsagents and general store at the end for odds and sods, while my fish supper was cooking.

Yogi's seems to be the only one still prospering. I can't remember what the other shops were.

Hi Gerald
I remember these being built... but I had actually forgot they were there... I recall one being a fruit and veg shop at one time, and another was a Butchers. I never knew there was a chippy there... live and learn.. ;o)

I lived down the bottom of Knott Lane for a brief period as a young mum in the early 70's and used to push my pram over the Knott Fold bridge on my way to and from Hyde. I had completely forgotten about it until I saw this photograph. Like Tom, I remember a fruit and veg shop, I also remember the butcher and the newsagents...I don't remember the chippy though.

It would have been the early 90s when I used to visit the chippie - they had a sign out at the top of Dowson Road pointing to "English Fish & Chips".

A scene repeated far to often here these days.

Things must be bad for a fish & chip shop to close. Especially if they were as good as you say they were. Gail & I had F&C tonight, as Gail isn't very well today and she wanted something to cheer her up.
