I wonder where that name came from then, I know Hyde was a Cotton Town but with the other local history in that area it seems strange. Enlighten me please somebody.
The name Cotton tree seemed very strange as it is a very rare tree that only grows in Hawaii apparently, until I googled it and found this site - does this explain the name??? www.tameside.gov.uk/leisure/new/bp_cottontree.htm
There is a suburb of Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland called Cotton tree which is where we used to holiday as kids.
Not sure why it is called that - must investigate!!!

Nice research Jules -- the Cotton Tree Pub in Newton is two or three miles from Reynold Street. One of the town centre pubs is called the Cotton Bale, one of the Wetherspoon's chain - it is usually a busy place although drinkers on an online guide seem to rate it poorly.
