Over the Duckboards

These duckboards in Gower Hey Woods afford walkers a dry passage across an area of swamp. Fallen trees in the swamp are covered with moss - see them on Hyde DP Xtra.

Over recent months I have been going through all the old posts, removing many dead links and irrelevant comments, and overhauling the tags/labels.

This brings to an end Hyde Daily Photo Volume 1 (2006 - 2011). The archives here will continue to be maintained.

A new blog has been created at http://hydedaily.blogspot.com/ The new URL is five letters shorter but although photo has been dropped from the URL they will still be the main content of the new blog.

Additional photographs will continue to be published on Hyde DP Xtra which is also where you will find the links to my blogger friends.

Non-contemporary material will still be published from time to time on Old Hyde.

Mothering Sunday Race

On Mothering Sunday last week some 100 athletes took part in a 5 mile race from Swains Valley up to Werneth Low and back.

Here the front runners are emerging from Swains Valley onto the Trans Pennine Trail.

Peak Forest Canal at Moorside Place

A view now of the Peak Forest Canal from Moorside Place, the housing estate built on the site of the former Automasters Engineering Works.

As the building works near completion there is now easy access from Ann Street to the canal towpath. What it will look like when these young trees grow up remains to be seen.

Spruced Up Sluice Gates

The sluice gates on the Peak Forest Canal have been spruced up and cleaned out.

See how it looked in February 2008 with barbed wire on top of the graffiti-covered brick wall hiding Automasters Engineering Works.

Now behind the low railings are new homes.

The latest occupant of the premises on the corner of Market Street and Croft Street is Inspired Jewellery who seem to have been in business for quite some time and have now moved to these larger premises.

It used to be the offices of an Estate Agent but that closed down recently. Mind you there are two estate agents on Market Street on the other side past Croft Street and another two lower down in the same block below the florists.

Road through Gower Hey Woods

In October 2009 I asked you to choose your path out of Gower Hey Wood.

This is the right hand path leading to Osborne Road.

Although now only a footpath, in the mid-19th century it was a busy road sett with cobbles leading to an industrial complex in the valley but none of that now remains.

Is it a Sundial?

On land at the corner of Throstle Bank Street and Dukinfield Road, in the Flowery Field area of town, is a piece of public art.

It looks like a sundial but lacks any figures that would indicate the hours. I think it might be a monument to the former industrial activity in the area, or perhaps it's just abstract art.

ABC WednesdayH is for Hyde Lads Club

This memorial is all that is left of Hyde Lad's Club, opened in 1930 by Prince Henry, third son of George V.

It is a rebuild of the memorial which was "knocked down" in February.

The Club was on Beeley Street - see photos on Hyde Cheshire.

According to Thomas Middleton's History of Hyde (1932)

The Hyde's Lads' Club is one of the most novel social ventures of the day, and has excited interest throughout the country. It was founded by Mr. J.W.A. Danby, Chief Constable Of Hyde, and was opened on October 5th, 1928 in a room in the Town hall. As the membership rose to 316 in the first three weeks, the club was removed to the Wesleyan School on Water Street, where it continued to flourish. Then Mr. Danby acquired the Old Police Buildings and site in Beeley Street; the building was transformed; games rooms, library, reading-room and small lecture rooms were adapted from existing rooms; a large assembly room was made out of the old court room, and a billiards room was arranged beneath it. A large hall and gymnasium was erected on part of the site; and when completed the premises provided for every phase of work associated with such a club.

The new buildings were opened by H.R.H. Prince Henry, Duke Of Gloucester, K.G., on February 6th, 1930, and were inspected by the Home Secretary, the Right Honrable, J.R. Clynes, M.P. in 1931. The club has received the warm commendation of some of the leading social reformers of the day. The main purpose of the Club is the prevention of juvenile crime, and to rescue those who are criminally inclined by bringing them into contact with clean-living boys, and transferring their inclinations into a more healthy channel. The principal features of the Club are games, physical training and gymnastics, classes in First Aid, Library, Dramatic Society, and other educational agencies, and each Sunday evening a short service is held. The boys are in the hands of fully qualified instuctors, whose services are voluntary. The Chief Constable's hope was that the Club may be looked upon as a place where boys may spend their spare time away from the streets, and improve themselves physically, religiously, and morally.

The notice above the name-slab mentions nothing about the good Mr. Danby but reads

TO COMMEMORATE HIS HONOUR JUDGE THOMAS HUGHES AUTHOR OF "TOM BROWN'S SCHOOLDAYS" WHO USED THIS BUILDING AS COUNTY COURT JUDGE DURING THE YEARS 1882-1896

In the earlier 1990s it was demolished to make way for a car park - see photos of the demolition on Hyde Cheshire.

Canal Bend opened up

Now that some of the houses on Moorside Place are occupied, the new road open and the fence by the towpath removed, the view of the bend in the Peak Forest Canal has been opened up.

The New Scout Hut

Back in 2007 I reported on the campaign to Save our Scout Group after the 3rd Gee Cross Scout hut was destroyed by storms.

The building work on the new hut is being spread over two phases. The first has been completed giving them a hall, kitchen. toilets and upper storey storage.

The second phase of building will provide a larger hall and bigger kitchen.

Manchester Road Roving Bridge from Moorside Place

A view now of the Manchester Road bridge over the Peak Forest Canal.

It is taken from Moorside Place, an estate of new houses built on the site of the Automasters Engineering Works.

See how it looked in January 2008 before the factory was demolished.

Manchester Road Canal Bridge was built in 1804. The original elliptical-arch tunnel which is grooved for stop planks was widened to the North in the mid 1800s with a truncated elliptical keystone arch which is now partly obscured by the 20th century footpath bridge.

Across the canal is Wharfingers House. This canal warehouse built in 1828 is a Grade II listed building now used as offices.

The road is the A627 leading to Ashton under Lyne.

Cotton Mills

"Cotton Mills" (in the plural for some reason) is the name that has been given to the development of new houses being built on the site of "Hyde Mill" (in the singular).

At this stage the back of houses on Cheetham Hill Road are visible as is Hartshead Pike in the far distance.

Mottram Congregational Church

The church dates from 1791 but was altered in 1836 and 1852 when the stone wing was added.

It was built as a Methodist meeting house, changed to the New Connexion in 1803 and to a Congregational church around 1850.

It is said to be the oldest surviving Methodist chapel in the Manchester area which is still in use as a place of worship.

The church itself is now an independent Evangelical Church whilst the adjoining chapel serves as a Pregnancy Advice Centre and other local community services.

It is a Grade II listed building. See Old Hyde for the official description.

The New Albion

It has also acquired a new pub sign which you can see on Hyde DP Xtra.

Curiously the new sign has an image of Britannia which is very different from the old sign which depicted a ship.

The Elms

The answer, as a few of you knew, is L.S. Lowry who lived at The Elms in Mottram-in-Longdendale from 1948 until his death in 1976.

It isn't exactly Lowryesque but I thought I'd give it a painterly look.

Look closely behind the white-washed walls of Byle's bedding showroom on Russell Street and you will find visible reminders of bricked up doors and windows stemming from the time when this was a redbrick built Victorian factory, similar to the ones still in use on Great Norbury Street.

Shadows on Level 3

Level 3 of the Clarendon Shopping Centre car park is on the roof.

The large block of flats is John Grundy House.

It is named after John Grundy, a former mayor of Hyde. His widow, Kathleen, later held the same position in her own right. She was destined to be the last victim of Harold Fred Shipman, whose legacy, alas, still casts shadows across the town.

The Lad's Rubble

This is all that is left of Hyde Lad's Club. Opened in 1930 by Prince Henry, third son of George V.

The Club was on Beeley Street - see photos on Hyde Cheshire.

In the earlier 1990s it was demolished to make way for a car park - see photos of the demolition on Hyde Cheshire.

All that was left was a memorial stone - see our post from September 2007 to see it, together with an account of its history.

Sometime on Tuesday night the memorial was reduced to rubble. Accident, vandalism, weather decay or what is not known.

I was told by two council workers whom I saw yesterday that although the plaque has been cracked the rubble is going to be taken away for restoration and should be back in place sometime next week.

The Court

The Court lies opposite the end of Russell Street and gives access for delivery to some of the shopping units of Clarendon Shopping Centre.

I think at one time it was called Colmar Way in recognition of the now forgotten Twinning with Colmar.

This photograph was taken several weeks ago when there was still snow on the ground. I hope to be able to post some more recent photographs soon.

It is one of two blocks of high rise flats in the town. Originally built as Council Housing but now operated by the New Charter Housing Association.

The Abstainer's Fountain

This fountain was presented to the Corporation by the Total Abstainers of the Borough in 1888. It originally stood on the corner of Market Place and Market Street. Its remains now stand in Hyde Park near the modern children's play area.

Follow Hyde United on Dowson Road

This part of Dowson Road from the corner of Markland Street down to Market Street was originally Swain Street before the road was extended in the 1930s bypassing the village of Gee Cross.

The sign on the lamppost says "For Hyde United follow Tameside Leisure Park" despite the fact that Hyde United is simply Hyde FC now.

St Barnabas, Hattersley

St Barnabas is the Anglican church serving Hattersley. It was built in 1965 and has served residents from when it was first opened in October 1966. Before that the residents had worshiped in homes from the very first weekend of moving into Hattersley. The church building was renewed following storm damage in January 2005. It is in an Interregnum since the retirement of the Vicar Rev Derek Akker due to ill health in January 2009.

Bengal Spice

Previously this was an Indian restaurant on Clarendon Place went by the name of Garlic. That moved some time ago to new premises above Clarendon Mall.

For a short time this opened as the "Bay Leaf" but has now metamorphosed into Bengal Spice.

Weekend Reflections in a puddle on Markland Street

Markland Street consists of two halves. The top half, overlooking Swains Valley Allotments, leads off the end of Haughton Street and ends above the old railway embankment.

The other half leads off Dowson Road.

The two sections are cut off by some garages here reflected in a deep puddle.

Behind the Barbed Wire

Last Thursday I asked you what is behind the barbed wire?.

Well I don't actually know.

The building lies between Mansfield Road and the former Godley to Apethorn railway line. Access is from Back Lane/Lumn Road.

The architecture is typical of the mid-Victorian factory buildings in the area. It does look as if it could have been a church originally but old maps only mark a "Pumping Station" nearby.

Top of Market Street

This is the top end of Market Street before it becomes Stockport Road at the Clock Roundabout.

The Estate Agents office was formerly "Stockport Road Post Office" despite being actually on Market Street. I suspect the original Stockport Rd PO was around the corner. Adding further to the confusion, Stockport Road was address of the former Gee Cross PO.

Both, along with Cheetham Fold PO were closed about three years ago.

Mottram Crown Pole

The Crown Pole at Mottram-in-Longdendale was originally erected in 1760 for the coronation of George III. It was replaced in 1902 and again in 1926.

Shadows and reflections at the old Rubber Works

The old Redferns Rubber Works is now an Industrial Estate with different businesses occupying the old buildings.

The large shadow belongs to a brick covered bridge that links two buildings across Dawson Street, which you can see more of on Hyde DP Xtra.

There are though several other interesting shadows to be seen here.

Weekend Reflections at Redferns Industrial Estate

The Redferns Industrial Estate is an area where a number of businesses operate from many of the old buildings that originally comprised the Redfern Rubber Works.

These reflections were captured underneath the covered brick bridge linking two buildings across Dawson Street of which you can see more on Hyde DP Xtra.

ABC WednesdayZion Congregational Church

The first Zion school and chapel was opened in 1847. It consisted of two storeys with the chapel above the school and was enlarged in 1859.

It was replaced by a large building on Peel Street which opened in April 1899. One hundred years later it too was replaced by the modern new Zion Church which opened in 2000.

Old Post Office Farm

Built in 1694 as a farmhouse, #2 Back Lane housed Mottram Post Office for many years.

Like Ye Olde Village Fish & Chip Shop next door it is a Grade II listed building.

Junction of Travis Street and Nelson Street

Looking down Nelson Street coming from Market Street. Travis Street goes off to the left. Nelson Street continues to the right then takes a sharp left to join Ridling Lane. That dog-leg section carrying one-way traffic between Ridling Lane and Travis Street is marked on some street maps and GoogleMaps as a continuation of "Travis Street" despite the clear streetname signs.

I don't know for sure but would suspect that the gap now occupied by a secure garage or store room was originally a corner shop.

The Trail on Christmas Day

Site of Dove Farm

These stables off Green Lane are on the site of Dove Farm.

Dove Farm, built in 1675 and enlarged in 1781, was said to be haunted by hounds.

Sadly the farm was demolished in the 1970s.

The Price of Petrol

Here is the Shell garage on Dowson Road open on Christmas Day when the price of petrol was 123.9 pence per litre.

The day before it had been 122.9ppl.

Yesterday it had gone up to 124.9ppl.

I wonder what it will be tomorrow.

Swains Valley on Christmas Day

When I showed you this shop back in July 2008 it was closed.

But now it is open.

It is a Grade II listed building and you can read its official description on Old Hyde.

Lumn Hollow

Lumn Hollow is, I think, the site of The Lumn. Long demolished it was the oldest house in Hyde.

An old text quoted on Hyde Cheshire states

a lane led to Walker Fold Lane, down Lumn Hollow, where an ancient bridle path, passed by Lumn Farm, then branched off, and then it became Ridling Lane, until it joined Hoviley Lane at Ridling pits (on the site of Queen's Hotel, Clarendon Place).

The semi-detached houses you can see here are on Ridling Lane. Some years ago Victorian terraced houses lined both sides.

In the background is a block of flats called Chartist House.

Mottram Courthouse

Behind the Back of Hattersley

This was taken in October from Chain Bar Lane.

Behind the tree on the left used to be houses on Winterbottom Grove.

Behind the fence on the right is Mill Hill Green.

The yellow crane you can see was engaged in the replanting of the Hattersley Monkey Puzzle Tree.

No Market on the Tuesday after Xmas

With Christmas Day and Boxing Day falling at the weekend this year, Monday and Tuesday were officially UK Bank Holidays.

That means many small shops were closed until Wednesday and the buses were running only a reduced Sunday service. Not that that stopped the bigger stores and supermarkets opening from Sunday onwards.

Tuesday is usually a very quiet day on Hyde Market anyway but this week it was totally empty - even the snow had gone!

Mottram Old Grammar School

Behind St Michaels and All Angels Church at Mottram can be found the Old Grammar School, now a private house.

It is a Grade II listed building and you can view the official description on Old Hyde.

Side entrance to Hyde Park

This is the side entrance to Hyde Park from Park Road opposite Park Drive. This may have been the original entrance to Newton Lodge. The Lodge was the home of the Ashton family who gave the park to the people of Hyde in 1902.

Sunday Bridges The difference from a week ago

The same view from the Eastern motorway footbridge by Hyde Bus Station looking under the Clark Way bridge over the M67 as I showed you last week. That was taken before the latest cold snap hit. This was taken on Friday morning.

As before, I zoomed in on the Pennine Hills but they are now so snowladen that it is hard to tell where the sky begins.
