Bus Stop to Go

I noticed the yellow notice on this bus stop a while ago, but thought it was probably just a flyposter. It was only on Friday morning that I actually read it.

I've copied the announcement, so if you click and enlarge the picture, you can read it for yourself.

I'll tell you more about it in a couple of weeks time.

The Village Chippy

Some two years ago I had an email from someone asking for a photo of Tommy Chow's, the very popular purveyor of fried chicken, fish, pies, chips and peas.

By the time I got round there it had already closed, but not long afterwards the shop re-opened under new owners as the Village Chippy.

I thought it was about time I took another picture. I don't frequent takeawayfood these days so have not personally tried their wares, but those I know who have testify positively.

Last Houses on Chain Bar Lane

A whole swaithe of houses on the Hattersley Estate have been demolished. These are the last to be left on Chain Bar Lane.

Just up the road near the end of the M67, there is already a McDonalds. What will be re-developed here remains to be seen.

Hyde Equitable Cooperative Society Ltd

The Rochdale Pioneers founded in 1844 are considered to be the first of the local cooperative societies. The movement spread across the whole of the UK and Co-ops dominated the retail market for about 100 years.

Anyone over 70 can probably still remember their Coop "divi-number".

The Hyde Equitable Cooperative Society Ltd's main store was recently the KwikSave supermarket but is now Wilkinsons. These initials are still impressed upon the building as they are on what is now a carpet salesroom on the corner of Market Street and Queen Street.

Higher up Joel Lane

The bottom end of Joel Lane has appeared here before, sometimes with Adamson Band marching down it.

This view is higher up round the bend past Arnold Avenue.

Some eighty years ago, the view in the opposite direction looked like this.

Hyde Chapel Organ

The organ case at the rear of Hyde Chapel is part of the original design of the building. It is not connected to the present organ and is now merely a decorative screen.

The pipes on view were last heard in 1869.

As part of the tercentenary celebrations it is hoped the case can be restored. The case is meant to represent a 12th century style and mirrors the look of monastic furnishings of the period. It may be based on a screen at Cartmel Priory.

Godley Junction from Hattersley

This view was taken from Hattersley Station using a zoom lens to focus on Godley Junction.

The line of the old railway to Apethorn can be clearly seen. The trackbed beyond Brookfold Lane is now a footpath and part of the TransPennine Trail.

Today on Old Hyde there is a 1989 photograph by Peter Whatley showing the junction more clearly and the platforms at what was then Godley East Station.

Scout Moor Wind Farm

Scout Moor Wind Farm can be clearly seen from the higher parts of town.

It lies some 20 miles to the North on the moors beyond Rochdale towards Rawtenstall.

A gallery of photographs showing the construction of the farm can be found on the Geograph site.

Bridge to Derbyshire

Last week I showed you the border post which was actually one of the supports for the railway viaduct over the river Etherow.

This is the road bridge. It is so narrow that a set of traffic lights regulates the passage over it.

Behind us is the steeply descending Lower Market Street, Broadbottom.

Across the river, the road turns sharp left under Besthill Quarry, before climbing the hill to Charlesworth.

Wet Wednesday Market

Another wet Wednesday afternoon on Hyde market.

Actually, this is another photograph from several weeks ago, the same afternoon I took the pictures of the rook on the roof of a stall and the pigeons under the roof of a stall.

I've shown you these Village Stocks before.

The previous view was from the opposite direction.

Footpath behind the Motorway

This footpath goes alongside the slipway of junction 3 of the M67 to Clark Way.

It leads past the Western footbridge to the bus station to the underpass at the other end of Clark Way.

L S Lowry

Across the road from The Junction in Mottram sits L S Lowry on his bench.

L S Lowry, lived in Mottram from 1948 until his death in 1976.

There is another version of this picture on my photoblog Sithenah.

Local duo Brian & Michael created a new audience for Lowry when they recorded their One Hit Wonder Matchstalk Men & Matchstalk Cats & Dogs. You can hear them talking about it on Old Hyde

August Answer

Last week I posed the question, What-is-it?

Air-filters; solar panels; dirty window-screens; motorway bridge; shed were some of the quesses.

Shed and bridge come close. It is in fact the walkway up to the bridge that gives access to Hattersley Station.

Border Post

Today's picture comes from my recent photo-trip around Broadbottom.

The river Etherow forms the boundary between Cheshire and Derbyshire.

In the middle of the river, straddling the border, is one of the supports for the Broadbottom Viaduct which carries the railway line from Manchester to Glossop.

Want to see the top of it?

Then if you haven't been there already, check-out last week's Skywatch Friday on Ackworth born, gone West.

Queen Street

Until a few years ago traffic from Dowson Road could cross Market Street into Queen Street at the traffic lights.

It led down past the James North factory, and came out on Lumn Road.

An estate of new housing has been built on the James North site and a school playground lies across the old route.

The printing works has closed down and plans are afoot to change it into a gymnasium run by boxing champion Ricky Hatton.

Entrance to Gower Hey Wood

Just off the TransPennine Trail is one of the entrances into Gower Hey Wood.

Various footpaths lead one through the woods and another access point is off Napier Street.

A Rook on the Roof

This rook on the roof of one of the market stalls is a frequent visitor I'm told.

I took several photographs of it when I saw it a couple of months ago. I published one of them on my blog Ackworth born, gone West and another on my photoblog Sithenah.

Fresh Chestnuts

I suppose it is the word daily that makes some people assume that the photographs I picture each day were taken, if not that day then the day before.

Like most CDPB authors, I do not take one picture a day - that way of operating would quickly become boring. Sometimes I do take an odd picture or two, whilst many a time I will go for a walk around an area and take lots of pictures. Rather than show them all at once, I string them out over the coming weeks and months. So most of the time what you see is usually at least a week old and maybe even several months.

But today I do give you something fresh.

I was waiting at the bus stop yesterday morning and someone pointed out these chestnuts growing on the tree by the cemetery.

The bus never showed and we waited almost half an hour for the next which was so full I had to stand all the way into town.

Another month and there'll be conkers strewn around as there were last year and the year before.

As for the photograph I'd intended posting today, you'll just have to wait a bit longer for that.

Croft Millennium Green

Whilst some terraced properties on Croft Street were modernised, the row between Henry Street and Great Norbury Street was demolished together with those on Albion Street which no longer exists.

The Croft Millennium Green was created in that open space.

In the background can be seen a crane on the building site behind Onward Street.

Bridging Market Street, Broadbottom

Two photographs for the price of one today.

In April I showed you Godley Arches on the Manchester to Glossop railway line.

In July I showed you Hattersley Viaduct.

Now we travel a little further down the line to Broadbottom.

The first picture is looking up Market Street towards the start of the Broadbottom Viaduct. The second is looking down through the arch towards the village, with Gorsey Brow leading off on the left.

You may have already noticed that the second archway is actually occupied. Whether it is residential or just used as business premises, I wouldn't know, but you can see its front door on my photoblog Sithenah.

Holy Trinity Graveyard Again

I have shown you Holy Trinity Graveyard before, but that was just a mere glimpse from Higham Lane.

This is a view of a larger area at the back of the church.

Behind the graveyard you will find some Xercise poles.

Metal: Werneth Low View Marker

The City Daily Photoblog network theme for today is Metal.

The word makes me think of heavy engineering and in Hyde the one name that comes to the fore is Automasters. Their works on the banks of the Peak Forest Canal closed down in recent years.

Today Old Hyde carries a picture of the works at its peak in 1980, which was the year they manufactured and donated to the town, this view marker which stands at the top of Werneth Low.

And what is the view? As it is Skywatch Friday the best I can do is to refer you to my post from a sunny Sunday in February.

You can view thumbnails from nearly 200 participants to the theme on theCDPB portal.
