This is a closeup view of the top of the Caxton Works, a derelict mill on Mary Street.

I've earlier posted a closeup of the doorway.

Two Little Crows

As the sun melted the snow that fell on Easter Sunday, I watched these two crows frollicking on the chimney pots across the street.

Corner of the Market and Town Hall, 2008

A view across a corner of the market towards the Town Hall.

Compare it if you will with the same scene 100 years ago on Old Hyde.

Jolly Carter

ABC Wednesday: J is for Jolly Carter.

I've featured a picture of the Jolly Carter here before, but it was almost two years ago (how time flies). This is from a different angle.

What changes can be spotted?

Easter weather

This was taken through the window just before 5pm on Good Friday. See how the daffodils have grown in eight weeks. The hailstones didn't last long and ten minutes later they had all melted.

My connectivity problems have yet to melt away. Since returning from holiday we've had a connection speed of around 100kbs instead of our usual 4-5Mbs. It also has a habit of disconnecting suddenly. I'm managing to get to visit blogs but many time-out before the photos load. Video-clips are impossible to view. It is actually quite interesting and revealing to discover which blogs load quickly and which take simply ages. Some of the extra widgets added to a few blogs make for a lot of extra loading time.

I've got draft posts for several days ahead and until I get back up to speed, Per Stromsjo from Stockholm is continuing to do the actual posting.

Hanging Bank Wood

Remember last week's picture Beyond the Barbed Wire?

That was taken from a seat above the gateway to Hacking Knife.

In the opposite direction is this wood.

Iceland

ABC Wednesday: I is for Iceland.

The company website map places their Hyde store on Travis Street to the north of Union Street amongst a group of terraced houses! A little piece of Travis St extends south towards Reynold Street and this is where it is located.

Peeping up behind the store is a sculpture on the top of the library.

The pay-and-display carpark in the foreground is what was created after the Hyde Lads Club on Beeley Street was demolished.

Top of the Cenotaph

I've shown you the cenotaph/war memorial on the top of Werneth Low a few times, including an older view from about 1990.

Here is a close-up view of the top of the cenotaph, taken, like so many of our recent photographs, on that bright sunny Sunday in early February.

Pakistan International Airlines

What is a Pakistan International Airlines plane doing on Hyde DP, I hear you cry?

Remember my picture entitled In over the Low?

Did you see the aeroplane in the sky?

A few seconds later as the plane got nearer I zoomed in on it and this is what my camera captured.

The roof of the HSBC (formerly Midland) Bank is very distinctive and very recognisable on old photographs.

Door to Caxton Works

This is the doorway of the Caxton Works on Mary Street.

To bring out the relief, I've increased the contrast and also removed most of the graffiti.

Beyond the Barbed Wire

I'm presently on holiday so while I'm away Per Stromsjo from Stockholm is kindly posting a series of photographs taken from the top of Werneth Low.

This is not from the top of the Low but half-way down at a place called Hanging Bank.

Here we are looking West past the Visitor Centre to Hyde Chapel and the City of Manchester in the distance.

M67 from a train

This is the M67 as seen from a train travelling between Newton and Godley.

Visitors have remarked before how quiet the M67 looks, but I only travel off-peak. The end of the motorway at Hattersley is just around the bend and from about 3pm until well past 6 traffic is likely to be backed up from there to here.

Under the Roving Bridge

This is the underside of the Manchester Road Roving Canal Bridge.

The pigeon I previously showed you waiting here probably wasn't ready to fly out into the light but return to its perch.

Today's post is our contribution to Broer som Binder [Bridges between]. More details and links to other participents can be found on Runes TX-Blog

New Trees outside the Town Hall

As I reported last week there are no more palm trees in front of the Town Hall.

Here is the new 2008 plantation.

I think they'll be adding some flowers around the trees very soon.

Sluicegates

This photograph shows the sluicegate on the canal outside Automasters. It is taken from the opposite direction to my post last week of canalside graffiti.

As I wrote in an earlier post on graffiti, much that I see around Hyde is puerile, if not offensive, and hardly worth preserving nor recording.

This is perhaps one of the more artistic examples.

Art or vandalism? Make your own mind up by visiting these 148 blogs who have all pledged to post graffiti or street art as part of this month's CDPB theme.
