Reynold Street

Looking down Reynold Street. The new apartments are behind us on the left.

The tall building on the left is the Conservative Club and the pub on the right-hand corner is the Last Orders Inn.

Toray Textiles Mill

Here is another view of those tanks which were the subject of my What is this? post.

If you want to zoom out (as it were) and view this from a slight distance, taking in the towpath on the other side of the canal, you'll have to visit my Sithenah photoblog.

Another Dead Pub

At one time the Church Inn on Market Street was a popular venue.

Just over a year ago it changed its name to Tylers, but it wasn't open for very long. Now it seems it is being auctioned off in a couple of weeks time. It is expected to go for around £210,000.

Karate Kids

These children are part of a group that were demonstating Freestyle Karate in the Clarendon Mall last Saturday.

They are certainly a lively, friendly, fit bunch of individuals. Their certified blackbelt instructor, Stuart Tomlinson of Evade Martial Arts also teaches kickboxing for adults.

Canal Bends

This is where The Peak Forest Canal bends round just to the North of Hyde.

Ahead is the end of Canal Street and the Railway Bridge from where I took an earlier picture looking back towards here.

In the far distance you might make out the war memorial on Werneth Low.

On the right hand side is the back of Automasters.

Seal from across the street

I've already shown you the Hyde Seal as viewed from the north side and also from the south side.

So here now is a view from across the street. Shame about the lamp-post.

Steps to the River

Last week I showed you the path from the river to the canal.

Turn round and in front of you are some steps that lead down to the River Tame.

To the left is the path I've just come up from Broomstair Bridge, under the motorway and past the frozen tracks and the fallen log.

The path to the right leads to Dunkirk Farm.

St John's Godley in the middle

Another view from the footpath over the M67.

This time we focus on St. John the Baptist's Church, Godley.

I think the road in the background going over the hill is Matley Lane.

Robin under the hedge

It was raining hard on Sunday morning. Looking out of the window, I noticed new green shoots around the willow tree.

An excellent candidate for haiga, thought I, grabbing the camera, opening the front door, squatting down and capturing the scene.

It was only when I downloaded the picture on my computer that I spotted the little robin in the hedge. Along with long-tailed tits, coal tits and other small birds, robins have been at the bird-feeder outside my window. They move so quickly though that photographing them there is not an easy option.

I've posted my haiga at Winter Haiku 2007 and also at Ackworth born, gone West, leaving the robin in shot and I'm wondering who'll be the first to spot it.

Finding the robin in this photograph could be called an act of serendipity. Read what Erik Tjallinks has to say about the subject.

In this crop of the original, I've made the bird centre stage.

Bus stop repairs started

I recently reported the Heritage Bus Stop was to be closed for renovation.

I assumed they meant the shelter, but I might be mistaken. This was the scene early Saturday morning. It looks as though they are renewing the pavement as a first step.

Cenotaph on Werneth Low circa 1990

I found this in a box of photographs recently. It was taken with a "panoramic" camera. I don't remember much about it, except that I only took one roll of film with it. Most of the results are not especially impressive but they include a couple of pictures of the Cenotaph or War Memorial on Werneth Low. This is scanned and cropped. The original was 60% sky!

The date is around 1990, I think. I've posted the other surviving photo on Old Hyde.

Canalside Tanks

Some people came up with really strange answers when I asked last week What is this?".

The winner is definitely Gwyn from Juneau, Alaska who said it was a fuel tank.

Actually there are two of them in the yard of a textile mill by the Peak Forest Canal. I can't be certain that they actually contain fuel; they may store some other chemical.

You can view the tanks from the opposite direction on my Sithenah photoblog. That photograph was taken just a few yards past the top of the stone pathway I posted earlier.

M67 looking East

Looking East along the M67 from the footbridge near Morrisons.

In the top left hand-corner is St Pauls Church. That picture was taken from here using my zoom.

The website Pathetic Motorways has very interesting details on how the M67 was originally conceived as a section of much longer motorway route from Manchester to Sheffield. The site also has a series of photos by Chris Marshall, taken in 2003 from a driver's perspective.

It seems we are no longer a lone voice in the NW. Hyde DP has now been joined by two neighbours. Joe is showing daily photos of Manchester and Martin is photographing Ashton-under-Lyne. Maybe we will all meet one day by the banks of the Tame.

River Tame under the M67 in Winter

In Summer 2006 I showed you the River Tame as it flowed under the M67.

Here now is a Winter view taken from under that same bridge.

What is this?

What is this?

No-one seemed to get my last quiz which was a squirrel's tail. Well this has nothing to do with squirrels - at least I don't think so.

Anyway there are no prizes, just a bit of fun - I'll reveal the answer next Sunday.

Heritage Stop in the Rain

I noticed a sign in the Bus Station yesterday that said the Heritage Stop would be closed for an indefinite period for refurbishment, so thought I'd better post this picture which was taken last week.

Well it does need some attention but let's hope they don't take too long as they won't be providing a temporary stop and it is a bit of a walk down to the Bus Station.

Rockets Galore

Between the 14th century Newton Hall and the weird chimney-pot at Dunkirk Farm, you'll find the technology of the future.

Starchaser began life as an experimental rocket test programme set up in 1992 by Steve Bennett from Dukinfield.

A few years ago the rocket was on show at Gee Cross Fete. Now they are busy recruiting astronauts.

This picture is by guest photographer Peter Parrott.

Riverside Tracks

These tracks were all found by the river Tame, upstream of Broomstair Bridge.

I wonder how many different ones you can see?

I don't know myself, so this isn't a competition or anything.

Come back on Sunday though for a "what is this?" quiz photo.

A very slightly different version of this photograph is on my photoblog Sithenah

It is a year and a half since I posted a picture of the view from Broomstair Bridge.

Here is a picture of the bridge itself, looking at it from upstream.

January 6th is the Twelfth Day of Christmas and in our household is the traditional time for taking down the Christmas cards and putting the crib away again until next year.

Graffiti

There are some blogs such as Tagging Taichung or Zürich's fubalu that specialise in photographing graffiti and other forms of street art.

Much of the graffiti I see around Hyde is puerile if not offensive and hardly worth preserving nor recording. Here, however, is quite an artistic example.

Frosty Willows

Remember my photo of Willows by the Peak Forest Canal?

Yesterday I was on the towpath and took a picture from the opposite direction.

On the left hand side is a Canal Warehouse dating from 1828, now used as offices.

Ahead is the Manchester Road Bridge.

Photo of the Year 2007

This view of the rear of St Thomas the Apostle on Lumn Road was taken from Tinkers Passage. I posted a view of the front of the church on May 30th 2007 and in June a close-up of the bell tower.

Visitors to this blog were asked to vote for their favourite photos from twelve contenders. St Thomas the Apostle beat Captain Clarke Bridge by 157 votes to 152. The runner-up can be seen on Ackworth born, gone West together with full details of the voting and comments on the twelve contenders. All 12 photographs can be viewed at Best of Hyde Daily Photo 2007.

This month I am not attempting to create a list of permalinks to participating blogs. Instead I have compiled a list of those blogs that registered on the CDPB forum to run with the theme. They are listed in chronological order with links to their earliest relevant archived post. This may not be the actual start date of the blog. I won't be adding blogs who didn't register for the theme, or who registered at the last minute. The information regarding authors and start dates is taken from Around The World with Daily Photoblogs Old and New.

Unless otherwise stated, all photographs on this site are copyright © 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 Gerald England.
