Pumpkins galore

We don't really celebrate Halloween over here and certainly not Thanksgiving but there are a sizeable minority of people who do engage in trick-or-treating, dress up for the occasion or carve pumpkins &c.

I took this photo inside Morrisons earlier this month. Later on I saw that Asda were selling pumpkins at £1 each. Supplies seem to have dried up as I didn't see any in Morrisons last weekend (not that I was especially looking).

There has been a lot of posting of pumpkins on blogs this last month so for all those who haven't yet had their fill of pumpkins, check out this lot and have a happy halloween, thanksgiving or whatever. Just don't come trick-or-treating at my door.

Morning Moon

The moon was bright in the sky yesterday morning.

This morning the clocks went back at 2 a.m. I won't repeat here my tale from last year about turning back clocks.

I had more than a dozen to deal with you. How many did you have? And how long did it take you to alter them all?

Fresh Do-nuts

Saw this do-nut stall on the Market last Friday. He wasn't there on Saturday so whether he'll be back remains to be seen.

This stretch of the river Tame is close to the Dukinfield boundary and the sewage works.

Arson Warning

I photographed this sign several weeks ago. Two of them were pasted up at a derelict shop on Market Street near Tylers which, incidentally, is now boarded up itself. It was only open for a couple of months following the name change. No I don't know the reason why.

I also don't know whether this shop was actually set on fire or whether the warning notices were just precautionary. The premises were still derelict last time I passed by but the notices have gone.

The Queen's Guard

We often see this guard dog on the flat roof at the side of The Queens.

Usually we hear before we see.

Bus Stop EH3000

No buses stop at this stop.

They haven't done so for two and a half years.

The new Hyde Bus Station opened in 2005. During its construction this was one of a number of temporary bus stops that were set up in town. The others have all been removed but this one remains even though it is Not in Use.

Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Back in March I featured a charity stall in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

Yesterday, a local charity, The Genesis Appeal based at Wythenshawe Hospital, had a stall in Clarendon Shopping Centre. My wife made a donation and got a badge which the lady (on the right in the picture) duly pinned on my wife's cap.

No Smoking in Four Languages

This set of No Smoking signs are from inside the market hall within Clarendon Shopping Centre.

So far as I can tell they are in Greek, Arabic, Polish and Chinese. I wonder why these specific languages were chosen. I would have thought the most likely candidates would have been Urdu, Bengali and Gujurati.

Traffic Warden issuing a Parking Ticket

Traffic wardens are not very popular and some critcism is justified. I don't have much sympathy though for someone who has parked on double-yellow lines, feet from a short-term parking bay and a corner. Immediately behind them is the exit of Oldham Street into Corporation Road.

Of course the fixed-penalty parking ticket won't cost as much as the clamping release fee in some parts of town.

Exchange Building 1876: Gone for a Burton

The Exchange Building on Market Street used to house the Hyde branch of the tailors Montague Burton. At one time the name of the firm was synonymous with high-class menswear at a reasonable price. My own impression over recent years is that the quality and choice hasn't kept pace with the opposition. I wasn't surprised to note recently that the premises have been vacated.

Whether the phrase Gone for a Burton relates to the firm or has some other origin is a matter of debate.

Southernbound track

Recently I posted a picture from Croft Street Bridge overlooking Hyde Central.

In the opposite direction, the next bridge down the line is on Wood End Lane. From here the tracks head south towards Woodley, Romily and Marple.

View from the top deck

A few days ago Keropokman in Singapore posted a picture of a double-deck bus and asked if others still rode on the top deck of a bus.

This is the view from the top deck of a bus leaving Hyde Bus Station.

Tit Feeding

Back in April I posted a picture of long-tailed tits and a great tit appeared recently on Wassenaar DP.

The tits are still here and enjoying the feeder now hanging in the rose bush. More photos of this bird can be seen on Ackworth born, gone West.

These roadworks on Market Street leading up to the traffic lights on the corner of Union Street opposite the Cheshire Cheese have been causing disruption recently.

Captain Clarke's Bridge

This bridge on the Peak Forest Canal is known as a roving bridge being designed so that horses pulling a boat could cross to the other side of the canal without having to be unhitched.

It was restored in 1986 and featured on Booth's Well at the Gee Cross Well Dressing in 2003.

Clamping Release is now £100

A warning to would-be parkers that they avoid this place on Norfolk Street. I always thought the usual £50 release fee was extortionate enough. Of course, if you belong to the legal profession ...

Looking down on Hyde Central

Here we are looking down on Hyde Central Station from the Croft Street bridge.

A commentator on an earlier post remarked:
I remember when this station used to be looked after by an old man. Since he passed away, it has never been the same & was left to rot for years. Though finally the railways have done something about it and re-opened the underway walk path. The platforms have had a lick of paint. It's a shame that trains aren't frequent, and as the author says the station is not exactly central!

Children's Clown

Last Saturday there were two of these clowns wandering around handing out balloons. They were promoting kids birthday parties. I picked up a couple of leaflets from their stall but there were no contact details thereon.

This is another photo from the Heritage Day at St George's. On display are photos from the church's 150th anniversay celebrations.

There is a closer look at the memorial plate on Old Hyde.

Cheshire Ring

Yet another Hyde pub with Cheshire in its name is the Cheshire Ring.

It stands on the corner of Manchester Road and, appropriately, Canal Street.

Quiet Sign

This photo is by guest photographer Martin Chadderton, who wrote
I'm a big fan of your Hyde daily photo blog, and I thought I'd send you this picture of possibly the funniest sign in Hyde, it's from Ogden Court just off John Shepley Street opposite Morrisons.

It's not the best quality since it was taken on a mobile phone from a distance, but the wording on the sign about the elderly is extremely funny. I very often walk past it and I chuckle every time. Maybe the signmaker should think twice about the wording next time?
You may have to click on the photo and view the enlarged version in order to read it clearly. It says
ELDERLY PEOPLE NEED TO BE QUIET
Do they indeed?

I recently posted the view of this bridge looking up Brookfold Lane and later, from the other side, a detail of the iron parapet.

Here now is a fuller view looking down.
