New Mobile Phone Shop

A new mobile phone shop opened up in Clarendon Shopping Centre last week.

To celebrate and promote it, this young lady, dressed up in flippers and a snorkel, distributed balloons to all the passing children.

She was in good spirits when we met her early in the day.

Awarded National Lottery Funding

Here is a bit of a quiz for visitors.

The blue plaque here states "Awarded National Lottery Funding".

So who can guess what sort of building this plaque is attached to? Was the award just for this building?

Answers in the comment box - I may offer clues along the way depending on what is said. I will reveal the full answer next Tuesday.

Winter footpath

I showed you this footpath near Alder Community School in the autumn.

Today's picture was taken before last week's snow arrived.

This muggy Monday morning, the snow has all gone, so the path today probably looks much like it does here.

The Milkman Cometh

In a recent post I mentioned the milkman forgot us one morning.

However he is normally very reliable and comes whatever the weather. Here indeed are his footprints in the snow.

One of our trees is missing

Remember the storm that demolished part of our garden fence?

Lower down the avenue it also uprooted a tree. We heard what sounded like someone digging the road up and could see the flashing lights. One of the three wagons had a crane. We thought they might be rescuing a broken down vehicle. It seems they were tree surgeons making things safe.

The tree was opposite the lamp-post I posted a picture of in October. The original photo from which I cropped that picture included this view of the tree as it was before the fatal storm.

The Price of Fuel

I was going to take a photograph of the entrance to Morrison's supermarket but this display of fuel prices seemed to dominate the picture.

I haven't driven for a few years now so haven't really noticed the fluctuations in prices in the way that I used to.

I remember though that the price of petrol per litre was heading towards the £1 mark. Now it seems to have dropped to 85.9 pence. Deisel was always slighter cheaper than petrol but is now dearer. In the late 80s when I drove a deisel car the price differential in mainland Europe was even greater. As for autogas, that was almost unheard of a few years back.

Cat outside cemetery

Whilst waiting on Back Bower for my bus into town, I spotted this cat walking up Richmond Hill and crossing by the southern entrance to Hyde Cemetery.

Market Bookstall

Although a good bookshop is something that is lacking in Hyde, we do have a very well-stocked second-hand stall on the outside market.

First Snow of Winter

It was raining yesterday morning but then it brightened up. Later on we had hailstones which covered the ground and piled up in corners. The sun came out again and they all disappeared.

About three o' clock the sky got very dark. I settled down and watched Ding win the first two frames of the Masters Snooker Final. I dozed off for a bit and when I awoke Ronnie had won four frames and the ground was covered in snow.

This was the scene about 7pm with this woman struggling to get up the street. Her wheels were spinning but eventually she made it. The gritters have been since and traffic is moving.

Flannagans of Hyde

Like Tylers and Last Orders, this is another pub which has recently undergone a name change.

Near the bus stop on Mottram Road at the corner of John Shepley Street we now find Flannagans. With Hyde having such a plethora of pubs, and me a non drinker, I can't remember what it was called before!

Godley Station Entrance

The entrance/exit to Godley Station is across the road behind the fence. Steps lead up to the Glossop-bound platform.

For Manchester-bound trains you have to go under the bridge to another entrance.

After the Wind

Yesterday the whole of Northern Europe was affected by high winds said to be the strongest for 17 years.

Compared with some we got off fairly lightly. The damage we suffered was only to our fencing. More pictures on my other blog Ackworth born, gone West

The milkman didn't turn up this morning so I couldn't have my cornflakes. Since I didn't go shopping yesterday for bread, toast isn't an option. I shall have to eat cake.

Other European DPs posting about the weather include: ** Arradon ** Brighton ** Budapest ** Hamburg ** Nottingham ** Rotterdam ** Vantaa ** Villigen

Awaiting redevelopment

These premises on the corner of Reynold Street and Crook Street used to house a discount clothing store. It was closed down about a year ago.

The building is across the street from the Bricklayers Arms and next door to the Central Methodist Church.

According to a notice which was attached to the "No Entry" sign, planning permission has been given for the building to be demolished and replaced by residential flats.

Shoe Sale

The Sales are on and there are bargains to be had. This shop inside Clarendon Shopping Centre doesn't appear to be doing brisk trade. Neither is a rival shop next door.

Maybe shoppers are too busy looking at handbags.

Cleaning the Drains

On the road outside our house is a drain cover. Periodically the council come along with a machine that sucks out the debris and keeps the drain flowing freely.

This photo was taken through the window so the view is partially obscured by the rose bush.

Post Office Window

I posted a picture of the Post Office back in August.

Today's picture shows the window display. At least Hyde still has a dedicated post office in the town centre.

Sizzlers

On busy Market Days there are usually two mobile hot food outlets on the market. Next to the Baked Potato Man is Sizzlers.

You can get bacon butties, hot dogs, burgers and hot drinks. BLT is bacon, lettuce and tomato. A quarter-pounder will cost you £1.50, onions and sauce free, cheese only 20p extra.

On sunny days you can sit outside and throw your crumbs to the starlings and pigeons.

On cold and/or rainy days you can go inside the Shopping Centre and eat them there.

Stonepit Reservoir filling up

I first featured Stonepit Reservoir in July and I was worried about what it would look like in six months time.

However a commentator to my September post said
I've heard that Stonepit is opening again for fishing. A 'leak' has been sorted and the fish are coming back from Glossop.
The other morning the gate was open and I got this clear view. I understand the renovation work will be finished in time for the beginning of the angling season sometime in March.

Bricklayers Arms again

Back in August I posted a picture of the old Bricklayers Arms.

That view showed the side facing Crook Street. Little has changed. The front door on Reynold Street is still bricked up.

Cold Tuesday

Whilst Hyde Market quite bustles most days, Tuesdays is an exception. It is officially closed, but there are usually a number of traders setting up on the stalls. Mostly they are selling second-hand goods. Last Tuesday, there was a cold new year wind blowing off the hills. When I got down in the afternoon only this guy was still hawking his wares.

Bangla City

Bangla City is an Indian Restaurant located on Grafton Street.

Two years running we came here for our Christmas Dinner. This year we didn't. Instead we went for lunch on my birthday four days before. What we like about this restaurant is that they don't put the tables too close together as happens elsewhere. It is also wheelchair friendly and serves good food at very reasonable prices.

Handbags for Sale

Last month Ham posted a picture of handbags on London DP, prompting Lynn of Cheltenham DP to comment
A fiver for a bag? hmm.... Gerald would be more impressed with this, than my post recently talking about a bag for £135.

Here on this stall, prices start at £3.99!

Conservative Club close-up

Last week I showed you a view of the Conservative Club.

Here now is a close-up of the first floor windows. You can see the coats of arms and also the rusty flagpole holder!

Leading a Horse

Why is this horse being led and not ridden?

Well I simply don't know, but we do often get riders up this suburban road.

You might notice some more of those painted marks on the pavement like the ones I showed you in November. I still haven't found out any more about them.

Rainbow

There was a rainbow picture on Belfast DP last week. The same wet and windy weather crossed the Irish Sea and came over us too.

This was taken on Saturday morning from outside the Postal sorting office on Hamnett Street.

Gatso on B6458

This speed camera (Gatso) is on the B6458, Stockport Road.

It is located just after a sharp bend in the road. Anyone crossing the road from the end of Back Bower near Stonepit Reservoir to get to the bus-stop needs to be very careful.

In a car though you have to travel another half a mile before you reach a sign telling you to Slow Down

Sportsman Inn

When I posted a picture of Mottram Road some weeks ago, someone remarked
Look at the top of the pub, I like the turret and all the fancy work around the top of the building, I bet most people walk or drive by there and never notice that
so here now is a picture of the Sportsman Inn face on from the bottom of Lumn Road.

2006 Photo of the Year

Today's theme is Photo of the Year. I couldn't pick just one out of all the photos I'd published this year, so selected ten contenders, created a web page and asked all my readers to vote for their choice. I want to thank all the people who took the trouble to vote. The winning picture is shown above.

Here are the results, together with links to the original postings and some comments from voters. All ten photographs can be viewed together at The Best of Hyde Daily 2006

1. April 28th: Jack Curvis (139)
He looks so jolly and so not an American.. is he a typical Brit? ** I just love how that picture looks like it belongs somewhere and isn't from where I'm from. ** I just love the smile on Jack's face and the warmth I see in the conversation he's probably having with you. ** I love the man's wonderful outfit and smile. ** for sheer colour and that welcoming smile ** I always prefer people shots and that portrait has lots of elements to make a good photo! ** A guy with a hat like that in a typically english shop. Great.

2. October 27th: Looking up Treacle Brow (114)
I love the way the road bends around the picture, such a lovely place. ** That's very English to me. ** The cobblestone street is so very beautiful. ** It is my image of Hyde, treacle is so English and only in England do you have Brows. ** for layout and pespective.

3. April 10th: Hyde Chapel (93)
Breathtaking. ** Wonderful. ** Scenery has good balance. Green color gives me relax feeling. Of course, Chapel itself is beautiful! Houses at the front is nice too, the view far away seems like an ocean. This kind of photo takes me to quick trip to another world!

4. November 18th: Salvation Army Buskers (64)
I love the Salvation Army buskers. ** It's a classic!

5. July 10th: Booth's Well (62)
It illustrates the past(Mad Hatter), present (the flowers), and the future (stained glass-time memorial)...also has a 2006 date which stamps its mark in time.

6. August 18th: Old Railway Cutting Wall (60)
Old railway lines are a passion. ** This wall full of ferns is just beautiful. ** I think the heritage of a location is most important.

7. July 30th: Stained Glass in Hyde Bus Station (58)
Lovely and evokes emotion. ** Wonderful.

8. June 2nd: It's a Dogs Life (56)
I have a golden retreiver ** Wonderful.

9. September 12th: Mayor Rings a Bell (30)
I really like 'Mayor rings a bell'. Clanging in a New Year, I guess. ** Lovely and evokes emotion.

10. September 9th: Inside the Theatre Royal (16)
I'm a firm beleiver in the preservation of the Theatre Royal.

The following DP sites have declared that they are running with the theme. This month I am listing them in order of their start dates. Where possible the links will go to firstly to the home page and secondly to the site's first posting that still has a photograph available. As the day progresses I hope to add links to the permanent pages for today's theme photographs. A few sites surpress permalinks and I also may not be able to include sites who join the theme late.
